From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

With the upcoming release of Object Desktop 2007, we've been doing a lot of work to provide updates to some of the programs we include in the suite.  You've already read about the newest application we added, Enhanced File Dialogs, and you've taken a peek at the improvements to Keyboard Launchpad.  Now it's time to take a look at the final three components that are getting some updates and work for the launch of Object Desktop 2007:

  • Theme Manager 2.3
  • Object Desktop Launchpad 2.0
  • Stardock Virtual Desktops 2.0

Check the link below for the article and further details/screenshots.

Interesting news. However, it seems that while Stardock virtual desktops got its version number bumped for OD 2007, there are still some outstanding issues with the program. For one, it still doesn't play well with DX or IconX (when either is running, SVD won't properly switch wallpapers). That's pretty sad, and there's no good reason for this behaviour. Additionally, for dual monitors, the tile wallpaper method doesn't work correctly. Instead of properly displaying the wallpaper across both monitors (like windows display properties method does), it repeats the first half of the image on both screens. SVD also does not remember it's geometry across invocations (using the toolbars menu from a right click on the taskbar, if you disable and enable SVD, it resets to some arbitrary size and forgets what it was set to previously). Since it remembers wallpaper settings, and so forth, it seems odd that it would forget its geometry.

I've submitted these issues repeatedly as bug reports, but at most I get some sort of canned response about how it's being looked into, but nothing ever changes. These are legitimate bugs that need to be fixed, but I never see anything but platitudes.

If you've decided that this program is not important as a Stardock offering, then feel free to say so, and I'll decide not to renew my OD subscription for the eighth year in a row, and I'll find something else to use. SVD is one of the primary reasons I subscribe, and it needs to have these bugs fixed, and it needs to play well with the rest of the programs in OD (e.g., I shouldn't have to sacrifice a feature from one OD program just because I'm running another OD program).

I'm generally very please with the programs in OD, they're some of the best available, so when I see issues like the ones above, it bothers me, because as good as Stardock is, these kind of issues should never be allowed to persist.

and will be for the next year lol

o well i allready gave up on that one, it's never gonna happen.

once i was using most of stardocks software, but now window blinds is working good for me i didn't extend my subscription, there are too many loose ends nowadays.

i used to use tablauncpad and cc waaay back in the OS/2 time, but now they are gone.
objectdock+ looks promissing but it's not on SDC ( I don't know why) so it looks like they have reprogrammed the tlp and made it in OD+ i'm not gonna fall for that lol.

All the hype that you guys at Stardock are trying to create over Object Desktop 2007 is great and all that. But let me ask a question. When will the over one half of the programs in Object Desk top become full and complete programs and not Beta’s? See it’s never said by Stardock that many of the programs are still under development, and there is no way to know until it’s been paid for and downloaded.

I have all Object Desktop installed and up to date, there are 4 in Beta, far from over one half.

I'm asking stardock..You know...the mouths I'll feed by re-subscribing to OD7. So let someone qualified answer my question. CELB #9

SIXX21,

If you uncheck "Show pre-release versions" in Stardock Central, you'll find all of the Object Desktop applications have stable releases.  One of the things we do is offer beta versions to users who want to be more cutting edge/help us in the test process.  So, if you have it checked to show the beta versions, it can create the illusion that some of our software is unfinished.  It's not, we're just letting you as an ODNT subscriber get a peek at the next version.  Of course, you don't have to download any update marked with a [ b ] (inidcates beta in vers number) if you don't want to.

All of the utilities specifically covered in the preview articles leading up to OD 2007 launching yesterday were pushed to Stardock Central by the end of the day.

Our software is constantly under development.  Like any software company out there we're always working on the next version.  We're just a little more transparent in the process so you see more of it.  We also update more frequently to address bugs or add features.  What you get for your subscription is a full year of updates, new features, bug fixes, new releases etc.  With the upcoming year, we will be adding versions of our software targeted at Windows Vista, so if you're planning on upgrading and want to keep on skinning the UI, you'll want to re-up your sub for that at least.

Currently, I see 6 applications in Object Desktop that have beta versions available for download.  All of them have stable released versions as well.

ZOOMBA,

Thanks for your response….I’ve done as you suggested and unchecked the "Show pre-release versions" and downloaded the 07 updates but 2 programs still show Beta. 1 ObjectBar.... 2 WindowBlinds 5. I have a much better understanding from your reply….but I also still have Betas.
on Aug 02, 2006
In the case of at least WindowBlinds, that's not a beta, that's an error on the listing we have in Stardock Central

OK........But this is what I see....
