From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Get in early, before the crowds
Published on November 8, 2006 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News
You've talked about the features, seen the screenshots, voted on a poll or two and at long last we're in the final stretch with the new WinCustomize 2007 site redesign!  Now, in advance of switching over the site to the new system and layout we've been allowing select groups of users in to test the site and help find bugs and layout issues.  This is all in an effort to make sure the transition is as painless as possible for the community as a whole.  Now though, the time has come to open the site up to an even larger crowd!

Starting today, current WinCustomize subscribers can get an early look at the new WC2k7 site design!  If you're a current subscriber, and are logged into the site, just click here:

http://test.wincustomize.com/

If you're not logged in, or are not a subscriber, you'll ONLY be able to see the main news page, you will not be able to navigate the rest of the site.  Consider this a "teaser" for your non-subscribers.  We kept the really juicy stuff back behind the front page!

Once you're in, click around... explore... go nuts!  Some things have not been hooked into the new site yet, specifically user pages.  If you want to see how user pages will look under the new design, we've converted a few users over to the new system to use as examples:

Those user pages will only be viewable to subscribers during this preview period.

It's important to remember that the site is not final yet.  While we're very close, there may still be bugs that need identifying and working out.  If you find a bug on the site, make sure you take a screenshot, and write up a description noting what page you hit the error on, and anything you might have done that led to the error.  Also specify OS and browser version.  Bug reports should be emailed to jpryciak@stardock.com

This sneak-peak into the new site is one of the ways we're trying to say "Thank You" to all of you who help support WinCustomize through your subscription fees.  If you've been on the fence about subscribing, wondering what your fee gets you, I can't encourage you enough to head over to our subscription page and pick one up today.  It's cheap ($20), removes the advertisements, gives you your own photo-album and personal site, and it helps us keep this site alive and going day-to-day.  Plus, you get an early look at what our web devs are working on with WC2k7!

So if you're a subscriber, head on over to WinCustomize 2k7 now!  If you're not a subscriber, well, what are you waiting for?  Go subscribe!

general search for people to search in more than one library at once.

I use that feature often in the current Search box by entering a search term, title or author, and choose "Gallery" at the top of the selections. This gives me both titles and authors related to my search request. Really useful in making up a theme for my desktop out of bits and pieces, saves time.

New site so far is great. Thanks, everyone.

Lantec:
Skinning the site has to wait until our Web Layout Guru has the time to build an alternative theme for the site.  Everyone on the net dev team is insanely busy just getting the site done and the first layout finalized and production-ready.

What do you mean by "hide online presence"?

What do you mean by "hide online presence

I am guessing that nogard does not want to be seen at the bottom of the forums maybe?

If it's the list at the bottom of the forums, that's a completely separate system from the WC2k7 refresh.

nogard, you could always hide your online presence by using a nickname........

The new site looks pretty sleek. I like the information on the right side of the screen. It's very well organized and well, it just seems natural. I like how my personal page appears now, but man, the personal info cracks me up!

Is interested in NOTHING!
Listens to NO MUSIC!
Admires NO ONE!

Okay, so I added the exclamations but it kinda reads that way. Also, shouldn't there be an option on whether or not a user wants their name displayed?

A few questions:

Will everyone have their personal page like the ones in the links (Zubaz, DA, etc.) complete with profile, gallery, favorites, articles, & comments section or is that just for subscribers? Because, that looks naturally cool. Much like alot of the profile pages that are all over the net.(e.g. YouTube, MySpace)

Same thing for Friends list.

Going back to explore some more....

The "Home" and "Forums" buttons on the navigation bar use a different font than the rest.
