From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

The CTO of Sun Microsystems, Greg Papadopoulos thinks that the world only really needs five computers.  Yes, that's right just five, so forget that PC or laptop sitting on your desk right now, Sun thinks you don't really need it... or at least you won't in the future.

Sun Microsystems, whose flagship product is the Solaris UNIX Operating System has long been an advocate for the shift back to the master server/terminal paradigm of computing, harkening back to the days of dumb terminals interfacing with some gargantuan computer in the basement of an office building, where all the work was done by the server and the terminal merely shuttled input and output data back and forth.  In the past few years, the industry has started looking again at the concept of "thin" clients, smaller PCs with a very small hard drive, little RAM and CPU that relies largely on a more powerful server with lots of storage to "push" content (applications, data) to the desktop.

Recently, the Sun CTO Papadopoulos posted to his blog that the future of computing would center on a handful of very big computers that run the desktops of all the world's home computers.  CNet News sits down with him to do a little Q&A about what exactly he means and how he thinks the future will pan out

And programming what they say we want to hear, see, and listen to.

This has been going on since day one of the media.

I absolutely agree this is a really bad idea. On the other hand, I have been around long enough to prepare for the future.

Perhaps not using the Internet would stop the companies from wanting to take advantage of that particular medium? It would seem the only way to stop such attempts by human ambition.

If we can't let go of it, it may be an addiction.

If we can't let go of it, it may be an addiction.

It has become as much an addiction and necessity as cell phones. When I see people swerving all over the road while they are talking on a cell, I recall the days when we had no such device at our disposal. We didn't NEED it. Hell, we looked forward to that weekend of camping when we could escape our landline phones. What happened?

And then, I see the people at Starbucks and Barnes And Noble with their laptops. What the hell? Are they just posing? The funniest thing is, we cling to them so much we shut off the outside world. Then, we take them with us into the outside world and beg you to stay back. 'Don't get that close. It's mine, my business, my private world, back off.'

It's beyond addiction. We have been led like lemurs to believe we can't exist without it. And we accept it. The only reason we bitch about it is to reinforce our own denial.

I shouldn't have said lemurs. More like a herd of cattle with hoof n' mouth. Cause in the end, we're gonna pay for it in a big way. The answer? Unfortunately, it won't be as simple as 'wiping that white foam off your mouth' (Bill Cosby). How many times have my wife and I said we would diet together and one of us doesn't or falls off and the other follows? Human ambition is like what this bozo wants to do with the internet and what half a dozen other nutbags wanna do...it's full of good intentions but too often, it's short sighted.

In the very end, those five servers would become three, then two, then one. 'The Terminator' and half a dozen other movies don't seem so far fetched all of the sudden. If I had to pick one as the best example of where it would all lead, it would have to be 'Brazil'.

The morons at Sun say this EVERY YEAR...and every year somebody sends this story around. I'm really getting tired of people giving this dying dinosaur 15 minutes for saying something this out of touch and stupid.

SUN...YOUR DAY IS DONE...GET OVER IT...FIND A NEW BUSINESS MODEL...OR DIE LIKE SGI.
