From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

We've all had to deal with them, the unwanted calls at inconvenient times trying to sell us things we don't want.  In recently years many of us have flocked to sign up for the Do Not Call list, barring telemarketers (except non-profits and political groups) from disturbing your dinner.  However, the calls still come.  Companies ignore the no-call lists and don't respect your requests to be removed from their database (something they're obligated by law to do if you request it) and it seems like there's nothing any of us can do about it.

But, there actually is!

A man in California took some time to look into the laws surrounding telemarketing and found that the same law that introduced the Do Not Call list, also has a provision for consumers to directly sue companies that violate the rules for $500/call.  So far, he's pulled in about $6,000!

Sorry, but I still have no sympathy for telemarketers. I find silent spam annoying enough. At least mail and email just lies there and I can reject it at my own time and will. But it's hard to ignore a phone ringing.
There is so much advertising around anyways that I don't want it seeking up me in my own home.
I've stopped shouting at telemarketers, and instead I simply pretent to be interested for a while until I just say "No thank you. By the way I've reserved myself from telemarketing so don't call back. Bye.".

Agreed, unfortunately I don't even get the satisfaction of saying No Thank You. All I receive are recordings giving me a number to call

What amazes me is that someone somewhere must be idiotic enough to actually call those #'s or how else could they be making money?

One particular telemarketer - who has rung us more than once every day for a fortnight

Call your phone company. They will put a tracer on calls coming in. When you get one of those calls, call your phone company and they will stop it. I dealt with the same thing a few years ago. At&T were pretty shocked to find out it was one of their people doing it. I would get a phone call at exactly 6:40 every day. Needless to say I dumped AT&T.
