From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

When we say you'll be getting new features when you subscribe to WinCustomize, we mean it, especially with the upgrade to WC2k7.  With the move to a more modular design and heavy use of CSS, we can implement changes much quicker than before.  Today I have two changes to share with you that have gone live in the past week or so.  Some I think a few have you already noticed and chatted about briefly.

  1. Would you like your Nav Bar on the left, or on the right?
WC2k7 moved the navigation bar to the right of the page.  Some of you love the change, some of you hate it.  There are arguments for and against having it on either side of the page, and they're all valid.  It comes down to personal taste ultimately.  Well, we've listened and our whiz-bang CSS and design guru, Dark-Star, whipped up a simple sub-theme for the site that flips the navigation bar from the right to the left.

My navigation bar aligned to the left of the page.

  2. Was 48 skins per page too few?  How about 100?
If you're a non-subscriber, you have a pretty limited number of skins you can view per page when browsing the skins libraries.  One of the biggest advantages to having a subscription (aside from killing those pesky ads) is the ability to select a much larger number to display per page.  This makes browsing a lot easier!  The upper limit used to be 48 per page, which would give you 12 rows of gallery items before you had to go to the next page.  Well, considering galleries like WindowBlinds have well over 4,000 items to go through, you'd still be clicking through 86 or so pages to reach the end.

Now, thanks to Code Monkey Dean, the upper limit has been cranked to 100 skins per page!  It will take just 41 clicks of the "next page" button now to reach the very end of the gallery.  Going along with this rather large increase in images to display, T-Man figured out how to drastically speed up how we serve images on the site.  So those 100 skins will load up in a blink of an eye!

To get access to these new options, just click on the "Settings" link at the top of the page and go to the "My Account" tab.  Make your selections and click "Update" and you're done.

We hope you enjoy these two new features, and we'll be working hard to keep the flow of extra goodies going throughout the year!

I was playing with the nav bar left/right thing the other week. Tried putting it on the left again, but I've already gotten used to it on the right so on the right it stays. Although, it doesn't affect the forum nav bar.

That's coming. Shouldn't be to much longer, and the forums will work the same way.

I *thought* I noticed some new bits on that page yesterday... Awesome!  I'm likely gonna give the left-hand nav bar a try, an DEFINITELY the 100 skins per-page... that'll work well for my gallery perusing.

Thanks crew... your work is appreciated!

It ain't worth 20 bucks! Maybe 5.95. Counting up all the software & skins I have purchased you would think they would bestow these wonderful (you got to be kidding that they are trying to sell subscriptions with this stuff the next thing you know they will say that Iraq had WMD'S!) benefits on me. Get it? They are trying to make this look better than it really is. My opinion will be slammed but I don't care because I KISS NO ONE'S ASS!

The money from the WC Subscription goes directly to supporting this site. Simply purchasing Stardock products does not keep this site going. I am quite satisfied with my subscription, it's the least I can do to help a site that I've benefited from, and I would hope that other users would feel the same...but apparently not. Give some, get some.

So buying premium skins and DesktopX themes doesn't go to help run the site. Is this so? I am sorry for being so blunt. What can I say? I'm a A-hole sometimes.

Half the proceeds go to the skin author, the other half goes to WC. But giving $2 per skin hardly covers the costs. WC subscribers get all sorts of benefits besides the new goodies mentioned in this thread.

Left side or right side, I feel so spoiled. How did I live without this must have "extra goodie" for so long.

Buzz... I'm sure that theres some other possibilities in the works for the future as well...

Who knows, maybe user-created site skins might become a reality for Subscribers?
