From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Sometimes skinning your OS just isn't enough

For the past several years, a fad has been steadily growing among computer enthusiasts with lots of free time, and really expensive tools; case modding.  Normally, your computer case is just some non-descript plastic box that you shove under your desk, or behind your monitor, anywhere to get it out of the way and out of sight.  Well, we here all know that just because something is boring or ugly, doesn't mean it necessarily has to stay that way (Luna... need I say more?), and it turns out that others know that too and have taken to building very complex and beautiful custom computer cases out of all sorts of materials.  I've seen clear cases, cases with coffee pots built into them, cases that are built to look like movie props etc.

Today's really cool case mod is made out of wood.  It's really a two part case mod, the first part to build an inner metal case with a window to house all the elements, then a hand-made wooden frame and casing to sit the computer in.  The case is 100% custom built and inspired by Japanese architecture.  Unlike many other case mods that go over-the-top in what they try to accomplish, this one looks stylish and very sleek.  The sort of thing you'd expect to see at some artistic design firm.

That guy should sell his mods. I bet he could fetch atleast a grand a peice for them

That case would be several 'grand'....stripped of all comp components.

Workmanship has its price....

Wow - this guy could easily create a business out of producing these - just stunning!!!

Snowman and whatwhere - the V8 mod you both linked to is also simply excellent.

Now, if only there was a way to do a really cool mod of a laptop

You can't mass produce craftsmanship, just facsimiles thereof.  Oftentimes there is a huge gap between "labor of love" and profitability.

I clicked the link and lost an hour to the internet sprites. Couldn't stop reading the log 'til I finished it. Was a carpenter, contractor, cabinetmaker 30 yrs. in Sun Valley, ID and Beverly Hills/Hollywood area and have rarely seen woodworking of this quality and attention. Also partial to Greene Brothers' style of "California Craftsman". They matched all components of a room in style and materials, flooring, furniture, paneling, lighting, and overhead beams and cassete ceilings.[see Gamble Housefor details]. This is obviously a 'one-off', one-of-a-kind piece. Made by a superb and meticulous artisan. Makes me want to go out in the storage shed and break out a dozuki saw and mortise-and-tenon something...
...lately my PC case ideas run more to LEGOs in primary colors
