From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

DeskScapes has been available for several months now, and DreamScene just went from beta to final yesterday.  Animated Desktops in Vista are becoming a more and more solid thing.  We've seen a lot of great contributions from a wide variety of artists here at WinCustomize.  Everything from original 3D renders, to great manipulations of static images with programs like Adobe After Effects.

My question is, what style of animated desktop do people like the most?  Do you have example to share?

Me personally, I like stylized Dreams that don't have too much motion.  Here are my two favorite community-contributed Dreams:

Poubel Tafiti v1.0 by brenopoubel

Circles by Hyszz

Both are absolutely beautiful and show off how cool an animated desktop can be without being too visually distracting.  When I pick a Dream to use, I look for ones like the Dreams linked above.

How about you?

How about some classic arcade dreams like space invaders or asteroids? That would be cool.

That broaches the land of copyright. You have to be careful on that tread. I know you arn' t the only one to bring something like this up but I thought I would say it anyway.

Id like a multi dymamic RSS feed system, with news events cascading down like matrix code in 3d.

And better mutimonitor options.

More of those 'dynamic content' dreams that utilise the power of a top end graphics card.

As simple as it was, I quite liked the rotating Stardock 'box' logo one and would like to see more of this kind of thing...

Chaninja's Shark dream, that's one talented son of a gun

Wholeheartedly agree with you there, John

What do I want in a dream? I could probably tell you most of it, but a lot of the dream would not be "family-friendly."

I would love it if someone created a dream based off the moving background from the movie "The Island".

There was a clip of it on youtube, showing it in motion. However it’s been removed.

If someone would make a high quality dream of this that looks very close to the original, I would gladly pay for it.

Am I correct in my thinking that highly complex, mass movement is generaly out? Unless you work in full window applications all the time. For comon use you only really apply simple dreams that do not include motion sickness right?

no motion sickness....lava lamp speed is good and I also think that some of these dreams getting passed should not even get the go ahead to be posted. I would hope that with deskscapes 2.0 coming out we will see a flux of talent pour in......just my thought

So far, I've only found one called "lavalamp" that described what I wanted, but it didn't actually deliver. I wanted something that actually looked like a lava lamp, with the lava bubbling up from below in long blobs that break up into slowly sinking globules. It would also be nice to have it on a blackish background rather than the hot white of the one I found. Choosing the lava color would also be nice.

I guess the closest I could describe the effect I am seeking would be to refer to the giant lavalamp-like display at No. 2's residence in the "Prisoner" TV series, if anyone remembers that. Lavalamps were frequently seen in that series, and the "Rover" was generated from the same material, if you took what you saw at face value. Such a dream would move at a leisurely pace.
