16 outstanding dreams
Published on January 3, 2008 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

As of January 1st, we stopped accepting submissions (or updates) to entries in the Create Your Alienware Dream contest.  To qualify, they had to create a dream with an Alien/Alienware theme, live in the US (excluding Rhode Island) and be at least 18 years of age.

These entries are now being turned over to our judges panel who will pick the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.  Results should be ready by the end of next week.

Would seem logical that it would have been more beneficial to Stardock to wait until Deskscape 2.0 for such a contest, that way allowing for a larger group of users/content makers. As for Alienware, wouldn't it have made more sense to hire someone as they have in the past? And if their goal was to get a quality Dream to distribute with their PCs do you believe it to be accomplished (considering the work The Skins Factory has done for them in the past)?

And yes, you're right, the purpose was to make a dream, not being able to run one. At this point I would venture to guess most of this (and pretty much every) community still run XP. However, that doesn't stop them from being able to create Vista content for windowblinds, iconpackager, etc but dreams are a different story. Furthermore, the nature of Dreams really makes them something that wouldn't need to be tested in Vista Ultimate, anyone with a media player who can locate the loop button could have taken a shot at the contest if Dreammaker were allowing.

If you haven't gathered, I still run XP, aside from the all too well-known compatibility issues the main reason I won't run Vista is my PC is a budget rig and the performance hit would be too much to bare with Vista (which I own, used for about 2 weeks, and formatted for XP). I would have loved the chance (and a damn good one it seems) to win a new PC. This contest was so asinine it's almost insulting. But don't take my word for it, the number of entries speaks for itself, contests with $4500 in prizes tend to generate a bit more quality participation than what's seen.

I believe the only thing that entered into the decision for the contest was this is what Alienware wanted to do. Now that's just my opinion, I don't speak for Alienware or Stardock.

I'm getting the feeling that you didn't think to much of the contest.

Good luck to all the entrants!

MindlessPuppet - Your reasoning is why Alienware and Stardock are industry leaders and your running a budget rig.
on Jan 04, 2008
Now really what kind of response is that? Are you an industry leader in your field? If not, must be cause of the that post.

Wow, so much text for a contest that is over with and the selection of the winners is taking place. Mmmmm, got to think about this. There is a purpose for everything in the universe. I know, I must need to apply some fuzzy logic here.

I must need to apply some fuzzy logic here.

fuzzy logic is currently being applied to judging. So shhhh, be quiet, I'm thinking...

I had a thought one time.

Are you an industry leader in your field?

Yes.

You'll have to forgive me if I'm hesitant to believe that.

MindlessPuppet ...that's somewhere between a less than tactfull personal opinion and a mild case of sour grapes for not being setup to be able to enter the contest yourself.

I'm confident the participants and organizers/sponsors are quite happy with the contest....

there's always someone who complains. i guess the forums just wouldn't be the same with them lol

Twas far more tactful of a response than any that I've recieved. But alas, Wincustomize has always been riddled with cheerleader drones so I suppose it should have been expected.
