I want that PC....
Published on January 15, 2008 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

Shortly after Thanksgiving this year, we announced the Create Your Alienware Dream contest.  Talented animation artists from all over the US had a chance to show their stuff and compete for three really great prizes; a $3,000 Area-51 7500 Desktop PC, $1,000, and $500 cash.  Outside of the GUI Champs, this is the single biggest contest (in terms of prize value) we've run.

Last week, the judges voted, and after contacting each of our winners, it's time to let everyone else in on who walked away with which prize.

1st Place - Alienware Area-51 7500 Desktop PC

UFO by patrick24

UFO was, by far, the number one pick by all the judges, leaving the other entries in the dust.  Probably one of the most impressive things about this dream was its technical execution.  It looked good, had a great loop and used almost no CPU to run.

2nd Place - $1,000 Cash

Alien Where? by TheMasterBaron

Coming in second was this interesting entry by WinCustomize's only Master Dream artist.  Watch as an alien ship slowly searches the terrain of an unknown world.  Good loop, high resolution.  A great entry from our Master Skinner.

3rd Place - $500 Cash
Alien Core by t2wave

This entry was t2wave's first attempt at making a Dream, which is pretty impressive.  Using little touches like taking the "alien language" from a previous Alienware contest, this Dream's attention to detail especially caught the attention of our judges.

Thank you to all of our participants, and to our judges (Island Dog, Fuzzy Logic, Snowman, WOM, Erk, Karma Girl, Snidely Whiplash, and the folks at Alienware), and most of all Alienware for the amazing prizes!

If you weren't able to compete in this Dream contest, remember that we have the 2008 GUI Champs coming this year, and I'll give you a hint... Dreams will be one of the competition categories!

Congratulations guys

Great job patrick...as I understand it, you couldn't even use this to test it. Is that right?

Good job guys! Patrick, that dream makes me want to go buy Vista.
Congrats to all three of you!

TCAlienWorks, the title Master is earned by these people, not just given to friends or employees of SD. The folks you see around here with the title "Master" in front of their names have worked long and hard, and have earned the right to that title.

Yes, I wasn't able to test it. I do have Vista Home Premium, but not Ultimate. That being the case, the only way I could test it was to win the contest, I mean comeon, who's gona pay for Vista Ultimate anyway....

CONGRATS!!!

All of you, amazing work!

Being a Master Skinner does not make someone either an employee or a friend of Stardock staff.

Being a Master skinner means you have been known to the Wincustomize.com admins sufficiently well/long enough to be elevated to 'Master' status.  Anyone at all beyond 'Citizen' level and most of them as well [Citizens] are likewise 'friends of Wincustomize.com' and are exactly/equally eligible to enter such a contest....

Jafo, actually the rules clearly stated that friends or friends of friends of workers at wincustomize are not eligible for the contest

TC, what's the big deal? So TheMasterBaron entered the contest, and won second prize. SD and AlienWare made the rules, and if they accepted TheMasterBaron's entry, you should too.....

The contest rules state specifically:
Employees of Stardock, Dell, Alienware, Microsoft, their friends and immediate families are not eligible to enter.

A person on a website with whom we are on friendly terms is not necessarily a friend.  For this contest, gh33da wanted to compete.  However, he's friends with one of our IT staff and comes out regularly to the office for LAN parties, goes to movies with us etc.  He was disqualified from entering.

TheMasterBaron is not direct friends with anyone working for Stardock.  He's on friendly terms with us, but then again so is just about everyone on the site.  Being friendly with, and being friends with are two completely different things.

The rule was to block friends of site admins such as myself, Jafo, KarmaGirl and Island Dog from entering to remove any question of favor.  In fact, to make it even more clear-cut, I myself did not vote at all as I was the one dealing directly with contestants.  I didn't want someone to be able to say "You voted for someone else because I sent you an angry email and now you're mad at me!"

Believe me, I went to great lengths to make sure things were fair.
