From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
The best toys are the ones that require the most imagination.
Published on January 28, 2008 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

When it comes to customizable toys for kids, there really aren't that many options.  Most toys are specialty items with a single purpose in mind (think action figures, toy cars etc.) and don't really push the imagination or creativity of a child.  In the list of toys that focus on imagination, creativity and most importantly all without any reference to violence is short: Erector Sets, K'nex, LEGO.

This month marks the 50th Anniversary of the LEGO brick.  Originally in 1958, the brick design has changed little since.  In fact, bricks purchased today will fit perfectly with bricks manufactured in 1958.

LEGOs were my favorite toy growing up, and to this day I still get a LEGO set from time to time.  My most recent being the LEGO Star Destroyer, made up of over 3,000 individual pieces.

I wish my girls played with any of the contstucor kits I grew up with.  They aren't into legos, lincon logs, erctor set, or tinker-toys.  I lost so many hours using all thre sets to build playsets for my Star Wars figs.

Man... just hearing the word "Lego" brings me back. Legos were my life from as young as I could remember. That's all I ever wanted for Christmas or birthday... Legos. My most memorable set was the first ever castle, sometime in the mid 80's. It was all yellow, and had a draw bridge, and a bunch of figures. When I was about 12, me and a friend combined all of our Legos (which was tons) and built a huge city that covered his living room floor. If you remember the size of the road plates, it was about 15x15 road plates in size. Houses, stores, tennis courts, a powerplant, a car dealership... we even built a cruise ship with 3 levels that docked just outside of town. It took us most of the summer between 6th and 7th grade to build... I only wish I had pictures...

One more thing... if anyone was a REAL Lego fan during the 80's they'll remember this... LL924

I loved Lego's as a kid and still get a hankering to buy them when I pass them in the store. Kid number three might be interested in them soon...I hope.

When I was small, they were just bricks. Now there are legos that have motors, you can program, and do things that I never thought was possible back when I was 5...

It is odd looking at legos today and wanting to get $500 worth and sit down to build them!

Oh, memories... Remember building a lot of cars and the like as seen in TV, like some James Bond ones and playing after the old 'Impossible Mission' series. Or lots of Jeeps after seeing 'Hatari'. *lol* I had 2 very huge boxes full of Lego back then...
