From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

Huzzah!

We've completed our work for the night and the forums are back up and running.  You'll notice a number of visual changes, and you'll hopefully notice improved speed and general performance.

Please post any issues you run into here.  We've done a lot of testing this past week and tonight, but if something slipped through we want to know so it can be fixed quickly.

Thank you all for your patience.

Hi!
These operation aborted messages are killing me!!!

I probably have a fairly unique and restrictive setup of IE6 as it is possible to have.

At home I too am getting lots of them. Using IE-6 allmost "out of the box".

Two more problems:
- "My replies" still not working (IE-6 and FF).
- In Personal (Private) Messages I can't write in the message text box (can't get cursor in it). Because the text box is empty, I also can't send the message with only the subject line (IE-6 and FF).

BR, Iztok

That will apparently not be coming back. It was decided that automatically shooting you to the end of a thread that you've read before (regardless if you'd read only the first page, or fifty) was too confusing to newbies. As with most other forums, there will just be an on-index pagination link for those who want to start on the last page.

Does that mean that there will be a way to go right to the last page/posting of a thread from the forums/subforums index?

AFAIK, yes.

Good news, thanks!

I've noticed that the forums still aren't accessible from the Society page. Can we take this a confirmation that the game is dead?

I still have three following significant and ongoing errors with these forums.

1) PNG Alpha Transparency.

2) Operation Unavailable errors in IE6 (I believe these could be related to the above issue).

3) Going to a User's Profile and then clicking on Metaverse Profile takes you to your own metaverse profile not the User's metaverse profile that you're trying to access.

Are any or all of these issues being actively worked?

Not to be impatient but is there any possibility of getting some kind of response to these questions?

Also what about the search ability? Is advanced search ever going to come back?

Not to be impatient

One curmudgeon to another, this makes me think you know you're being impatient . It happens easily to us all in computerland, but if you've been around long enough, you can usually calm down by making yourself remember things like posting to a BBS with a 300 baud modem or taking a day and a half to download the latest patch for your most beloved game.

Plus, the budget for dev time here is very different than for the game--we buy licenses, but the forums are "free" and "business value" claims are considerably harder to quantify.

Yes of course I'm being impatient and I mention it only in attempt to be polite. But these issues are very painful and I'm not asking that they be instantly fixed, I'm only asking if they will be fixed at some unspecified time in the future. That's not being impatient it's merely asking for a status update. The lack of a search is particularly painful; actually three of the four issues I mention are very painful. The PNG Alpha transparency thing is minor except for my suspicion that it contributes to the operation aborted issues.

Assumably they will. IE6 is still a not insignificant portion of the browser market.

Yeah but it should be supported Mumble not the only one using IE6 even tho they are a few in Numbers

Also PM will not let you add text to a link you are inserting to send to some one unless i`m doing it wrong using Fire fox !!

I think you missed Kryo using a double negative correctly. IE 6 still has notable market share, or put differently,
is still a not insignificant portion of the browser market.

The use of the double negative is a very passive form of agreement. It's like saying I can't disagree with you which is far different than saying I agree with you.

This is semantics and I doubt that Kryo intends any underlying meaning to it use. However the issues I bring up are of two significantly different classes.

Certainly the operation aborted and PNG alpha transparency issues are related to IE6 and in some sense can be considered bugs.

But the inability to access a person's metaverse profile from their character profile and the lack of advanced search have nothing to do with any particular browser choice. In fact one could consider the lack of these two features a design choice as opposed to any kind of bug.

Basically it has been mentioned that GC2 is near end of life and perhaps it's felt because of that these forums don't necessarily warrent any special debug over whatever seems to work fine for the bulk of Stardocks other forums. That's essentially what prompted my questions which still really haven't been answered, other than with a vague maybe.

I see it as unfortunate that a good number of people still use IE6. It's a very poor browser by most standards and I won't be sad to see it go when it eventually does. But we do need to support it for now, so rest assured that the issues will be addressed in time. The web team just has a lot of stuff yet to do as far as fixes, reenabling things that were dropped in the initial build versus the old forums, and continued improvements.

As to the search, I don't even recall there ever being any advanced functionality myself... google with site:forums.galciv2.com is far superior in pretty much every way in any case. If there are issues with what's here though I'm sure they'll get addressed. I can't say as to what more will be (re)added in that respect though.

I'm sure the metaverse link will get fixed as well. We've yet to release TA, so don't expect anyone to jump ship just yet

Pretty new forums don't do much when half the functionality has been removed/disabled. It isn't just this forum or due to GC2's age either. The Sins forums are the same software and have all the same issues since the switch.
