From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

For years now, a WinCustomize subscription primarily allowed you to browse the site completely ad-free, gave you fully access to the Skin Browser, and every now and then a free skin from Stardock.  In recent months, we've been talking about how to change the site subscription model to make it a better value to users, with the goal obviously to encourage more people to subscribe and support the site.

So today I'm happy to announce a transformation in the WinCustomize Subscription plan.  With Object Desktop, you get a year of software updates to some great skinning applications, but what about content?  To answer that, from today forward, a WinCustomize subscription will give you access to twelve free Stardock Design skins a year!*

Our first free skin to subscribers comes from one of the most respected and talented skinners in the community: adni18.  Stardust is a killer WindowBlinds skin that gives your desktop a modern & flashy look without being distracting or annoying.  Glassy edges, cool colors and attention to detail make this a skin every WindowBlinds user needs to run.

Subscribers can grab the skin from the Subscriber Resources page (must be logged in).

Pricing

Because we are now offering $60 in free skins a year, the pricing of the WinCustomize Subscription is changing.  Effective immediately, a WinCustomize subscription costs $29.95 per year and you'll renew on a year-to-year basis (i.e. no more 2 year renewals).  You will receive all the old benefits of a WC Subscription, only now for $10 extra you're getting $60 in skins.

Bundles

Don't have a subscription yet period?  Well, we're working on some bundle packs for new users.

WindowBlinds Extreme

Currently, if you buy WindowBlinds Extreme, you can get WindowBlinds plus a WinCustomize Subscription for $39.95 (a $10 discount on the first year of a WC subscription).

We are working on a similar bundle for Object Desktop.  Expect more info on that when it's ready.

Q&A

Now, I'm sure everyone has questions about what this change means for them.  Let me quickly cover the high points...

  1. I already have an existing subscription, do I get these skins too?
Yes, you'll have access to all skins released while your subscription is active.
  2. How often will skins be released?
We'll release 12 over a calendar year(Jan - Dec).  Sometimes it'll be one a month, sometimes more, and sometimes we may miss a month altogether.
  3. It won't be one per month?
We're not guaranteeing one per month.  Sometimes schedules get hectic and projects get in the way.
  4. What if I don't like the skins, can I get a substitute?
Nope.  Think of this as a book of the month club or something similar.  Sometimes you get a great skin you love, sometimes it's something you wouldn't be caught dead running.  We'll be trying to release skins that appeal to a wide audience, so some months you'll love it, some you won't.
  5. No more 2 year renewals?  What if we've recently purchased renewals?
The change does not affect users who have purchased renewals prior to the change-over.  From this point forward you will not be able to purchase additional 2 year renewal.
  6. Why get rid of the 2-year renewal?
Well, now you're getting essentially $60 in free skins every year for your $30 subscription.  That should be sufficient value and not require a discount for future years.
  7. What if I subscribe two years from now, will I get the last two years of subscriber skins?
No.  Subscriber Skins will become Master Skins a year after they're posted.  At which point you can purchase them at a 20% discount.
  8. What is the release schedule for the skins?
We're going to release skins when they're finished and through QA testing.  I'll post teasers for upcoming skins as they near completion.  But there is no set release schedule
  9. So some of these skins will be from MyColors Themes huh?  Will I get a discount on buying the full theme if I already have the skin?
Yes.  We'll be offering MyColors Theme discounts similar to how we offer discounts to Object Desktop users.  Full details on the discount will be posted when the first MyColors Theme using a WC Skin goes up.

If there are any other questions about the new subscription plan, let me know either in a comment or via PM.

*a year is a calendar year, January 1st to December 31st.  Because this plan is launching in May of 2008, the 2008 skin set may fall short of the 12 target by December

I'm just saying that I have been a part of this from the beginning and it's just sad to see it turning into what it's turning into.

Hey you, at least you may have give me one Karma back !!!!

Not only has the cost increase of food and gas hit my wallet but my escape is hitting my wallet as well.

I pay good money for my 'escape'...and gladly. Since 1985 my escape, aka ONLY Holiday of any real length [about 10 days] has been to pay to work at the Grands Prix in Adelaide, '85 to '95 ...probably out of pocket about 10 thou...ignoring not-working [self-employed].  Since then...not so pricey...GPs are now in Melbourne where I am...downside is the break is smaller.

I certainly prefer to spend money on 'hobby/relaxation/escape' than on getting teeth pulled at the dentist....

I'm really pleased about this new subscription. It's a real bonus and a 'thankyou' to those of us who supported the site by subscribing many years into the future.

Next time there's a subscription drive going on though, I'll probably subscribe again. This is my hobby, and for that, £15 a year doesn't sound so bad. One Blu-Ray disc costs more than that (there I go, putting things into perspective again ), and for the price of two discs I get my subscription and all my software, with some free skins thrown in as an extra.

Sounds like a good deal to me

do the math...and you will know what i am talking about

I don't begrudge Stardock covering costs or making profit.  That's their concern.  I'm more concerned with me.

$29.95 for 365 days = eight cents a day + 12 skins (which you may or may not like)
or
$29.95 for 12 months =$2.50 a month + 12 skins (which you may or may not like)

= a pretty good deal for my addiction

I make no secret of being a big Stardock/WinCustomize fan. However,I do think that the features that we get vs a non-paying visitor should work. At least most of the time.No advertising and Rating/Voting on skins are paid advantages. Why are they broken all the time? I haven't rated in 5 days, limiting my downloads in the interest of fairness. Please, keep the ads off and.....please,please please, fix the VOTE button. (

If you're set against the idea of the new subscription plan, there's really not much anyone can do to convince you it's a "good" thing.  We know that whenever we raise the price on anything, some portion of our userbase will not like the change.  It's just a fact of life.  But we have to adapt to things as they change.  It's not 2001 anymore.

Unfortunately, we have to cover costs better.  WinCustomize, with all of its downloadable content, servers, developers and infrastructure needs doesn't get cheaper with time, especially considering that the site grows more sophisticated with every iteration.  When it comes down to it and we have to choose a price hike versus cutting back or restricting services, we chose to up the price, but provide additional content in exchange.

If there are just three skins out of the twelve you like a year, you've already made up the price difference and gotten a "free" skin.  We felt this was a reasonable trade-off that would satisfy the largest group possible.

Of course, if you don't like the deal, we won't force you to subscribe.  If you're a current customer of any of Stardock's software, you'll continue to get unlimited downloads, you'll just have to deal with web ads.  You don't really lose out on the community content, it's just less convenient and you won't benefit from premium features we might add in the future.

Like everything, you have to figure out if the cost is actually worth it to you.  Break it down however you like (Zubaz did a daily and monthly cost), compare it against your essential costs, or your other hobbies and figure out what value you might or might not get out of it.  Then make your decision.

While we are at it I've also pondered increasing the price of my Master skins a dollar, as far as I can see, everything.. is going up.. except our household income.. price increase is inevitable. Look on the brightside..at least there is no product shrinkage going on here.

WC is here 24/7/365 with help, humor and great stuff, also a browser and IRC chat. That takes money.

Exactly the point I was making here,Zoomba. Sure, our cost of living goes up, then we ask for a raise. Why should WC be any different. My internet service costs me 29.95 a month, how about WC's?(No, I won't trade bills with you)  WC is the best value on the 'net.Period.
on May 10, 2008

My internet service costs me 29.95 a month,

Mine's more than double that...[and I bet still slower]...and the lion's share of it is simply me being on here....

on May 10, 2008
Lets not forget that the Subscriptions are here to help WC support itself. This is the lone reason why I subscribe, everything that come with it are Perks that I enjoy. As usage and demand go up, so does cost. Thats just the way it is.

Thanks for the wonderful Blind Nikos!
