From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

Stardock is excited to announce the release of WindowBlinds 6.1 today.  WindowBlinds is the easiest, and safest way to change the complete look and feel of both Windows Vista and XP by applying one of thousands of visual styles that are available.

These visual styles can change just about every element of the Windows user interface from the Start menu, task bar, title bar, push buttons, scrollbars, and nearly everything else in Windows.

The WindowBlinds 6.1 update is available to current customers as a free update, and users can upgrade either through Stardock Central or the Impulse preview.  The WindowBlinds 6.1 release includes the following updates:

  • Several maintenance and performance tweaks.
  • Option to force start button to the middle of skins.
  • Explorer background feature.

The Explorer Background feature allows users to change the background of their explorer, along with the background color and opacity.  There are 30 different background textures to choose from, including a "no texture" option that lets you set just the color and transparency of the Explorer background.

WindowBlinds has a free download available for evaluation, and is $19.95 for the full enhanced version.  WindowBlinds is also part of the Object Desktop suite of desktop enhancements.

Option to force start button to the middle of skins.
So the startbutton can be set to the middle of the taskbar??

Option to force start button to the middle of skins.
If that's what it means it doesn't work. Maybe a little clarification.

I have been having another problem with WB for quite awhile now. On my my laptop, running XP every time I right click on the task bar, or click on a pull down menu, explorer crashes and then I get the white Active desktop re-activation page and mu current background disappears. I know his is related directly to WindowsBlinds because as soon as I un-install WB, the problem goes away. Anyone else having this problem or does anyone know of a work around for this? I have not ben using WB because of these problems, (thought I'd give this new build a try), which can be really frustrating when yo are trying to get work done.

Make sure you reboot before posting errors.

Wet Monkey: If you have nvidia nview enabled please try disabling it.

"Option to force start button to the middle of skins"

This means the start button can be positioned in the middle vertically on multi line taskbars as the aero orb is.  The default in WB is to position this at the top of the taskbar.  This is a Vista only feature.  Users can force this via the advanced settings page in wbconfig, or skin authors can set it in their skins if they want the button to use this mode.

Was wondering about the start button thing myself. Was asking a few skinners if it would be possible to skin it so that the button is centered vertically on double task and they didn't think it was possible without a lot of work, so this is cool!

I have switched to using Impulse for downloading updates, the WB update has not shown up there yet, it is showing up in SDC.

Do I cause myself problems by using SDC to download this update or should I just wait for it to show up in Impulse? Or because of the difference between SDC and Impulse do I all ready have the update and don't know it?

All good questions. Try SDC and see if it's there.
