From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
It's almost time. Ask your burning questions now
Published on September 29, 2008 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

Alright, we're about two weeks away from the start of the 2008 GUI Championships and the launch of the brand new GUI Champs website.  We're seeing teams form up, and I know some of you out there have been working very hard on your entries for months now.  With the contest so close though, I wanted to make sure that everyone was clear on the rules, the technical requirements etc.

So now's your chance.  Ask away!  Any burning questions or nagging doubts?  Want to know if your masterpiece will be accepted?  Want to know if you meet the tech requirements?  Not sure if that icon is OK?

You can see the current basic rules on the GUI Champs temporary splash page at http://www.guichamps.com/

This year we are sponsored by ATI, TechSmith, Wacom, Stardock, DeviantArt, Corel and member sites of the skinning community.

Is CPU useage going to be looked at when judging dreams? I would like to go with WMV since it will look & loop better and have a smaller file size but the CPU useage suffer if I do.

Since the SDK has yet to be released, are dynamic dreams going to be allowed? It would be an unfair advantage if they are allowed since only a handful of people have access to it.

Well! With Stardock being a major part of the judging team, will Stardock’s employees such as MikeB be permitted to participate in the Gui Championship? Stardock has hired many so-called Masters to work on special projects which can be viewed as "Work on the side",but there are those who hold tittles from Stardock. Are Wizops, Administrators, and other Stardock employees entitled to submit entries in the Gui Championship?

CPU usage will be looked at in terms of Most Usable, and will likely play a part in Best Overall Dream events.

Dynamic Dreams are allowed if you can figure out how to do it without a SDK.

Stardock Employees are not permitted to compete in the 2008 GUI Champs.  This is limited to full-time employees of the company.  Artists who do contract work for Stardock are free to enter as they are not employees of the company.

Employees of sponsors are also not permitted to compete.

How long do we have to wait till we can upload to WinC, once we uploaded our entry to the GUIC site? Do we have to wait until after the competition is over?

I don't have a team...How's that going to work?

Do we have to wait until after the competition is over?

Yup.

You must submit to the GUI Champs FIRST.  Once the entry is posted to the GUIC site you are welcome to post it to other sites as you wish.  We just ask that you make mention that it is a GUIC entry and provide a link back to the contest site.  THat helps drive traffic and gets the word out.

Note that entries posted to the GUIC will be merged with WinCustomize after the contest is over, so you don't necessarily need to upload them to WC separately.

I don't have a team...How's that going to work?

Teams are more for fun than anything else.  Users will form groups with their friends in the community.  Each user competes seperately for the regular events.  Every medal awarded has a point value.  At the end of the competition we add up those points by team.  The team with the most points wins a bit extra.  It's just a fun thing to do, and an excuse for us to give away extra cash

OK, thanks Zoomba!

Hmm, I didn't know that. I'm currently not affiliated with a team...anyone looking for a Dreamer for a team member?

The GUIC will run almost up until Christmas.  We will list the deadline dates and all that good stuff soon.
