From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

A few months back, we started loosening up the requirements for what was and wasn't accepted into the public wallpaper gallery here at WinCustomize.  A lot of wallpapers that wouldn't have previously made the cut, were let in, but some were still considered "below the line" and were rejected.

Going forward, we will no longer be rejecting Wallpaper submissions based on quality.

This however does not mean that everything submitted will be posted to the main public gallery.  Moderator discretion will still be used, and anything that would have been previously rejected, will now be placed on the user's personal page only.  This will allow people to store their work, have their own personal gallery, without it necessarily being placed in the larger public gallery.

Wallpapers however will still be rejected for issues of copyright and technical functionality (i.e. a 250 x 400px image still isn't a wallpaper).

This means that you may get an email saying your submission was accepted, but be unable to find it in the public gallery.  You should still be able to find your work on your personal page.

Note: This doesn't cover the rating system, which can also impact the visibility of a submission.

bad idea...unless you are planning on subdiving the wallpaper category into MANY sections...

How does this change impact the main galleries?  "Personal Page Only" walls won't be seen by anyone browsing the gallery.  It won't get in your way at all.

Images "250 x 400" and smaller can be wallpapers if they are intended to be tiled.

But that's probably not what you were referring to.

I think this is a good idea. My main concern would be making sure it is clear to the wallpaper submitter when and why their submission is only on their personal page. If only in the interest of keeping the forums less cluttered with "What the..?" posts. The New Release section (or somewhere) could be encouraged as a place for folks who want to promote their personal page and unique submissions.

I like it because it reminds users of the personal pages at all, and also it give a level of encouragement and satisfaction that a cold reject letter certainly does not. It is also neat to have a place where you can just put stuff for people to see--although if you're not in a gallery and you don't advertise in the forums, not many people will see it on your personal page.

Maybe personal page submissions could be included in searches?

Personal page items will remain restricted to personal pages only.  It doesn't make sense to clutter the search system further with items deemed not ready for the main gallery.

YEA! Now I can submit my "Britney riding a dolphine jumping through a circle" You are going to get a lot of submissions. Isn't that going to put a lot of useless data on the servers?

Isn't that going to put a lot of useless data on the servers?

Generally speaking anything which is submitted and even rejected outright still remains on the servers.  The reason for that is to maintain a 'history' for future reference if/when there's a query about an upload/submission.

This is also how it's possible to restore people's works when they have had second thoughts after  deletion.  It has even saved a few people who may have removed some of their works only to suffer a harddrive failure, etc and subsequently lost the 'original' files.

Of course, this shouldn't be taken as some handy backup feature for one's personal use.  Once something is deleted either by user or admin there is no guarantee it will not be physically erased at some later time in a 'tidy up' to clear more headroom...

Thanks Jafo

And "dolphin" doesn't end in an "e".

Refresh my memory on the WC Personal pages. Many times I look at a profile and the person doesn't have one - or didn't bother or know how to set it up. Are the WC Personal sites available to a person with visitor status ? I know you don't need a WC Subscription because I had mine before that. But I was a Stardock customer and I think I got the WC personal site after I bought Object Desktop. Im wondering how this will work. If the moderators deem a wall to be only for personal site what happens if they dont have one ?

..or will Moderators check before they decide on that ?

I have always liked the WC Personal site option and thats why I wasn't happy when they were turned off at times. I find they are a great way to view others work. I wish there was a better way for others to 'see' your personal site. Like at DA whenever I reply or post my WC link always appears at the bottom of the post because i added it as a 'signature' Makes it more viewable to new people that might not know to click on someones user name to see the info. That would be a nice option in the future. A siggy so we can have our site links visible. Maybe people would also use the WC Guest books more often if they had an easier way to view them. I rarely even check mine because very few leave a message there - plus , if they do you have no notification there is a message.

Just a few suggestions to think about. The signiture idea would be nice though.

Still kinda wondering about the personal pages - does everyone have the option of one - I dont remember if I had it when I was a visitor or after purchasing something ?

Anyone can create a personal page so long as they have an account (essentially, Citizen or higher) of course, you also need to have an account to submit wallpapers in the first place.

It is up to the user to create their own personal page.  Moderators can't go through each wall submission to see if the user has set theirs up or not.  We get several dozen walls a day at times, so it's not practical to go to that depth of investigation before sending a submission off on its merry way.

Signatures on posts, that's a feature request we get often for the forums.  It may come in the future when the net dev team has some free time... But no promises.

Oh ok, I wasn't sure and I didn't want to advise someone to go make a WC site and confuse them . I wasn't sure about visitors because they have a 50meg download cap.

That would be nice - the average 'visitor' probably has no idea to click on someone's user id to see more of their work or might not even know what that WC personal site icon is for.
Thanks for answering.
