From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Many people remember the fish screensaver that was part of AfterDark from Berkeley Systems years ago.  The cute little fish leisurely floating across the screen was oddly hypnotizing and you could lose hours just watching your virtual fish float along.  There are reports of some people actually naming their little virtual pets.

Aquarium Desktop from Stardock is sort of the spiritual successor to that long-lost screensaver, only ten times better!  (Ok, maybe a mere 9.5x, but who's counting?)  Instead of being forced to stop what you're doing, and let the screensaver kick in, Aquarium Desktop adds the fish, the bubbles, the treasure chests, the rocks and the castles to the desktop itself.  Work on a word document as a clownfish floats by.  Check your email as a school of Rantyu Reds swim about.

Today, we're launching the next version; Aquarium Desktop 2007!  We've gone in and touched up a lot of the visual elements, added new aquarium backgrounds, and just in general improved the overall experience.  Here are some of the features:

  • Smoothly animated fish swim across your desktop in a life-like manner.
  • Plants gently move to the current of the virtual water.
  • Add plants, anchors, debris, and even a treasure chest to your desktop.
  • Options to configure type and quantity of fish, shadows, sounds, and more!
  • CPU-Smart.  Will not use CPU if fish are covered.
  • New backgrounds and visual elements with the new 2007 version!

Geek.com, had this to say about the application in a recent review:
"Kids will love this product, and it's a natural fit for shared family computers."
-Ron Garveston, Geek.com

Aquarium Desktop makes a great holiday gift for friends and family who might not be ready for the full desktop customization process.  Also, at $10 for the base application and $5 for any of our three fish packs, it's a gift that won't break the bank.

So go pick up Aquarium Desktop now for just $9.95, with discounts available for Object Desktop subscribers, and owners of previous versions of Aquarium Desktop.

The screenshots on: https://www.stardock.com/products/aquarium/screenshots.asp show the base Aquarium elements.  Fish Pack 1,2 and 3 are displayed below it.  All the base fish, except 2 (the Rantyu and saddleback) are shown in the screenshots, for a total of 9 fish.
