From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Many people remember the fish screensaver that was part of AfterDark from Berkeley Systems years ago.  The cute little fish leisurely floating across the screen was oddly hypnotizing and you could lose hours just watching your virtual fish float along.  There are reports of some people actually naming their little virtual pets.

Aquarium Desktop from Stardock is sort of the spiritual successor to that long-lost screensaver, only ten times better!  (Ok, maybe a mere 9.5x, but who's counting?)  Instead of being forced to stop what you're doing, and let the screensaver kick in, Aquarium Desktop adds the fish, the bubbles, the treasure chests, the rocks and the castles to the desktop itself.  Work on a word document as a clownfish floats by.  Check your email as a school of Rantyu Reds swim about.

Today, we're launching the next version; Aquarium Desktop 2007!  We've gone in and touched up a lot of the visual elements, added new aquarium backgrounds, and just in general improved the overall experience.  Here are some of the features:

  • Smoothly animated fish swim across your desktop in a life-like manner.
  • Plants gently move to the current of the virtual water.
  • Add plants, anchors, debris, and even a treasure chest to your desktop.
  • Options to configure type and quantity of fish, shadows, sounds, and more!
  • CPU-Smart.  Will not use CPU if fish are covered.
  • New backgrounds and visual elements with the new 2007 version!

Geek.com, had this to say about the application in a recent review:
"Kids will love this product, and it's a natural fit for shared family computers."
-Ron Garveston, Geek.com

Erm ... when I click the "Buy"-button I get to www.stardock.com. I guess the link is wrong ...

That is very odd.  Which page is the buy button on that you are referring to?  From the main link above, I tested the button and it leads to:  https://www.stardock.com/products/aquarium/purchase.asp

I tested all the ones that i could find, but that doesn't mean that I didn't miss one.

The first "Buy" leads to www.stardock.com, the fish packs have the URL store.stardock...

Ah, in IE it works.
Strange, in Mozilla I hit the refresh button several times and still there is the wrong URL ...

The upgrade from AD6 is $4.95. Not bad, especially considering you are supposed to get a free WB skin!!

I thought 99.99% of WindowBlind skins were free anyhow.

The fish that were a "bonus" to people who upgraded from the original Aquarium Desktop to Aquarium Desktop 2006 are included in 2007.

Why wont the fishpack3 work in AD2K6?

It just seems odd to have so many goldfish in a marine environment. Yet most of the marine fishes come in fishpack3 and an upgrade to AD2K7.

Also, what are the resource usages for AD2K7?

No, but it comes with a "complete" WB skin to match. I think it'd be nicer if there was a bit done to the taskbar.

Anyway, heres the link to the WB skin> AD2K7 WB skin
