From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
But... it's new and shiny! I want! I want!

Essentially, there is nothing in the tech world going on at the moment beyond the Vista business launch and all the press activity related.  So, what's another cautionary Vista story amidst the flood of others?  CNet has a new article providing 10 points to consider when evaluating Vista for purchase.  This isn't so much a pro/con list, and it's not especially critical of the new operating system.  It merely puts forth ten very important points to think about when considering moving to Windows Vista.  Since we're still in the business launch window, the article focuses on Vista from the point of view of IT managers and others who would be responsible for recommending and possibly implementing the new technology.

The article asks questions such as:

  • Do you actually NEED Vista yet?
  • What is the actual cost to an upgrade?
  • Can your network handle the increased demands Vista will place on it?

A pretty good article for anyone who may be inching closer and closer to purchasing, but haven't taken the time just yet to evaluate their situation.  It asks the questions us over-eager techno-heads often forget to in our excitement to get the newest toy.

I've become so comfortable with my RC2 version of Vista now that I have to get it when it comes out for consumers. I'll get Vista Ultimate for my main system. But not necessarily for my other system. I might for for a lighter version or simply stick with XP for a while.
As for my parents, I won't recommend upgrading their system. They simply just do not need it. However, they've been thinking of replacing their desktop system with a laptop instead, so they might end up with Vista anyhow. But that means I'll get a load of question of why things doesn't look the same. ...

Those darn parents, with their questions and thinking. I am getting a laptop for the holidays and I am sticking with XP. I will be away for too long to recharge the battery enough from when vista drains it dry.

I'm only going to get Vista because I want something new/different. I am getting a little tired of XP already.

I have Vista RC1 and used it for a bit. The sad thing is that some of my drivers won't work properly, so I can't play games on it. I am using Nvidia and the Vista beta drivers are only good for RC2, NOT RC1. So, back to XP for now. When Vista comes into the stores, I am definitely upgrading though. Hopefully the drivers will be updated by then.

Considering I'm still running Windows 2000 (with WindowBlinds 4 and TClock3 to make it pretty), no, I definitely don't need Vista (and I don't plan on upgrading to it).
