From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

In addition to developing fine applications such as WindowBlinds, Multiplicity and ObjectDock (to name just a few), Stardock occasionally does a bit of game development.  Earlier this year, we released a title you might have heard of; Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords.  Turns out this little strategy game was pretty well-received by the gaming world, garnering Editors Choice and high ratings at major media outlets, making it the #7 highest rated PC game of 2006*

So it's no surprise, considering how well the game was rated by the press and gaming public at large, that Gal Civ 2 is now nominated for numerous "Game of the Year" awards, and a favorite on Holiday Game Gift Guides.  Here's a taste of the awards we're up for:

Reader's Choice Best Strategy Game

On top of that, both GamingNexus and GamerDad have flagged GalCiv 2 as a "must buy" for any gamer on your shopping list this holiday season.  It seems pretty much unanimous that Galactic Civilizations II was a huge hit this year, one we look to follow up on with the release of the Dark Avatar expansion pack this February.

Not like there's any 4x competition at all anymore ... not a jab at stardock, as GC2 is a very fine product... but just a lament about the state of the games industry that only FPS, RTS and MMORPGs get any development anymore. I liked some of the old simulators, like Capitalism 2, SimCity series (and most of Maxis' other Pre-EA stuff) and obviously Stardock's GC series. Now it seems like if I don't want to play Everquest/WOW, or an annoying realtime strategy, I'm left with a first-person shooter. Well... that means my latest gamejoy is Serious Sam 2... At least if I'm going to do an FPS, I'll have fun at it.

OTOH, I have already bought Space Rangers 2 - good to see it got a positive mention as well from GameSpy.

This year also saw the release of the Civ 4 expansion and Medieval II: Total War.  Both solid TBS games.
