From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Ooooh.... shiny...
Published on January 16, 2007 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News
After months of coding and testing, tweaking and rearranging, and many hours spent by our web developers toiling over line after line of code, feature request and last minute change, we are proud to officially launch the new WinCustomize.com!  A lot of time and effort has gone into the design of the new site to make it easier for users, both new and old, to quickly find exactly what they want.  We've also expanded the functionality of the site in ways that are aimed at rewarding long-time community members, and to make everyone's time here at the site more enjoyable.

The most drastic change most will notice is the completely new design and site layout.  The new look, with its glassy blacks, grays and whites is a much needed refresh to the old blue and white design users have been living with for two years now.  The new "skin" for the site looks a lot more modern and inviting.  One of the goals of WinCustomize 2007 was to make the site itself skinnable.  Our design guru, Dark-Star designed WinCustomize with this goal in mind, and in the coming months, we will be adding additional site skins for site subscribers to pick from.

On top of the visuals, a lot of time has gone into cleaning up a lot of the visual clutter from the old site.  The front page is much less busy now, focusing in more on actual content.  Where before there were scrolling lists down the side of the page, we have a much shorter sidebar.  The top of the page is focused much more on community content with items like "Today's Favorites"  the "Featured Skin" (which can be browsed to see the last three featured items), the latest poll, "Today's Hot Pages" and "Featured Articles.

Digging down further, we've tried to make it as easy as possible to browse through the galleries and subcategories under each major library.  A common complaint regarding the old WinCustomize was that it was difficult to specifically browse through a sub-category like "Holiday" under WindowBlinds.  Or that it was difficult to find a given article after it had fallen off the "Newest Articles" list.  To help remedy that, we've built a breadcrumbs system that will allow users to see exactly where they are, as well as how to get back to where they've been.

Of course we will have a guide up in the near future explaining how to use the breadcrumb system, as well as some of the other new features of WinCustomize 2007 (such as the search bar being contextual based on what gallery you're browsing).  But they're pretty easy to use.  Just try clicking around on the arrows between the section names and you should be able to pick things up very quickly.

Now, we've done a lot to refresh the site from a technical perspective, but we also had a large focus on the community when working on this project.  One of the major additions with WinCustomize 2007 is the ability for Master Level skinners in the community to sell their work directly through the WinCustomize store.  This is a way for us to help out some of the skinners who have been around for a long time and contributed greatly to the community.  Users who subscribe to WinCustomize.com will receive a discount when purchasing any Master Skins through our store.

For the rest of the community, we've opened up the WinCustomize Personal Pages to all users.  A WC Personal Page is your own little corner of WinCustomize.  You'll get your own WC subdomain (i.e. zoomba.wincustomize.com), a photo gallery to upload and store your digital photos, and a place to easily track both your own submissions (this replaces the MySkins.aspx page) and keep an eye on articles and skins from your favorite authors here at WinCustomize.  (To activate your personal page area, go to the Settings link underneath the search box, and click on the "Personal Site" tab.  Follow the instructions to create your site.)

There are a number of other new buttons, links and features tucked away for you to discover.  In many ways we've tried to make it as easy as possible for members of the community to take an active role in the site by providing quick links to submit news items for the site, to write articles of interest, and to submit content to the galleries.  So please, take your time, explore, get comfortable and give us lots of feedback!

And of course, be sure to thank the folks who toiled away, hour after hour, to bring you this great new site.  Our crack team of .net coder monkeys did an amazing job taking this site from vague concepts to what you see before you right now.

T-Man, Dark-Star, jpkylegirl, dean183 and andrew_.

Also, thank you to all of you who helped us out by submitting bug report after bug report, broke the test site in new and interesting ways and helped us really hammer out the kinks before launch.

Digg!

'Putting perfume on a Pig'

@andrew: Hope you don't mind if I use this, perhaps with a fake Sean Connery accent. Priceless.

RE: site
So much better there's no comparison. I miss the old site like I miss my old dogs or my '57 Beetle, but..."change" is what life is.

Pet peeve: Looking for DOCKS/BACKGROUNDS in Object Dock is akin to sorting thru ancient paper archives in a huge storehouse with no filing system. I was just searching for Backgrounds/Docks, a particularly favorite pastime, and after NINE PAGES I had finally squinted my way to the first of the Docks(2) to be found. They're really buried deep under icons and pngs!

Idea: Could that tiny blue Object Dock icon that looks like a circle be modified to indicate a DOCK/BACKGROUND? Can we PLEASE have a Separate DOCK/BACKGROUND category? I, for one (1), change themes often, and enjoy having matching, co-ordinated docks. To be able to view them together, as a group, on pages without icons or .pngs or anything else, would be a pleasure. As it is now, trying to figure out what's a background/dock, what's a .png, and what's an .ico is more than my rheumy old ancient eyeballs can handle for more than a minute or couple of pages. To say nothing of DOCKLETS...not much going on with them that I can see anyway, but a separate category would be a good thing.
Ideally, I could click on the Object Dock icon (as In WB, DX, IP...), and then have a list/popup of sub-choices: Backgrounds/Docks, .icos, .pngs, Docklets. As it is now, clicking on the word DOCKS just gets me pages of anything BUT docks...

Another site ruined.

This only seeing 8 skins on a page in the gallery despite being a current Stardock customer sucks. It's not worth the time to look at those epilepticly-lethal flashing ads for 8 skins per page.

Have you guys *ever* checked for valid HTML?

I am working as a web developer now - used to be a C# guy before . Just one thing: there's no standard for HTML (yet) when browsers each goes its separate way, desperately competing each other. IMO, W3C's validator is worthy of nothing. updeters, have you ever tried to HTML-validate Google? Yahoo? Flickr? Microsoft? Are they valid? No. Do they work for you? I bet yes.
It must be admitted that there are still some bugs, but the first thing I see is that they must have been working very hard for this great new site.
So, please, no scorn

I AM PARIAH custom your settings in top right of the home page and select skin per page 8 to what you want.
I think when they load the new site that unload our settings to settings base.

This is great. It is a lot easier to navigate, and just looks better. 5 Stars

but the first thing I see is that they must have been working very hard for this great new site.

I'm on the opposite side of the world and timezone, yet a lot of the Stardock crew were still here when I was...when they 'should' have been snoring annoyingly somewhere....so yes, they were working hard....

Stardock and wincustomize one does a remarkable work with this new site.

Personally, which I notice it is that it is increasingly easier to criticize when nothing was done or that one cannot do it. I do not think that they is made that by fingers clap. Work on this site this remark with the first glance.
It should not be forgotten that they have work starting from the old site and not of a new base. Thus that wants to say that they have to move all the pictures, windows, links, and to reorganize the source code of the site. And the whole in a stable and coherent way.
By holding account of the number impressing of customer and skins, think there before criticizing easily.
As well as for creations of the various authors I think that it would be preferable to remain about it with criticisms constructive. For example if one notices bonds which do not go towards the good pages...

Personally, I repeat Great work Guys!!!!!

Congrats on a great design. I like this better than any of the previous designs

From a performance, quality, reliability and maintenance perspective the new website was well worth the effort. Minus the few smaller items that were left out of the initial upgrade, the site is wholly superior to it's predecessor.

I agree that the new website is quite an improvement, especially regarding the positives you mentioned: performance, quality, reliability, and maintenance. Can't complain about those one bit.

Some of my comments which questioned the deployment of time/resources to enhancing the website vs. updating documentation/tutorials of the various ObjectDesktop apps is based on my ignorance of not knowing whether the website team was different than the application support team(s). I honestly don't know how big the staff is at Wincustomize or Stardock.

So, given that the website team is separate from documentation/tutorials, there isn't much more to comment 'cause my comments ultimately are irrelevant to the discussion of critiquing the website itself. And again, I do like the new-n-improved website.

While you may see simply updating the content as a 'good enough' or even more worthwhile endevor, that would essentially equate to 'Putting perfume on a Pig' as my grandfather used to say. What good is better content, if you can't always get to it, find it or download it?

Another similar saying: "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

Agree with the notion that it can be pointless to have great content, but no way to find it. (Kind of like walking into a casino, and then being completely lost as to where the hell an exit is located.)But, what if Microsoft never updated their Books Online for SQL Server 2005, but instead only had BOL for SQL 7? How much added value would there be if Microsoft released a new snazzy website that makes finding out-of-date content easier?

I'm truly a huge enthusiast of the ObjectDesktop apps. I would like to contribute to the GUI Champs competition, but hard to do when submissions should incorporate the latest WB5 features, but no documentation/tutorial available to provide examples of how to develop a skin that takes advantage of the latest WB5 features. Perhaps the documentation is available and I merely didn't find it under the old website or at Stardock? (An honest question, not meant to sound sarcastic.)

Please understand that my comments aren't meant to devalue the tremendous work that has gone into the new website. You guys are awesome at constantly improving the community's experience at Wincustomize. The release of the new website is to be applauded.

Keep up the good work (and ignore dolts like me that need to find the appropriate community discussion form to share "wish list" items".)

Anytime I approve of the Sean Connery accent 200%

peterzeke1 : Not to worry, never took your comments negatively. Your points about the documentation are absolutely valid. This kind of moreso boils down to a 'chicken and egg' situation though. While both things are required for a good experience... which comes first? We both agree that both viewpoints are valid, so we've encountered quite the quagmire Stardock digs positive community involvement and I'm sure that what you've said here will be received well and reviewed.

love the new visual layout. I do miss being able to only click once to see the popup sample of a WindowBlins skin, though.

That's a good idea. I'll see what we can do.
