From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

The reviews keep coming in, and Dark Avatar shows no signs of slowing down or slipping on the ratings chart!  Our latest review comes from UGO.com and writer Adam Swiderski.  The tagline for the review on the front page of their gaming section reads:

The best turn-based strategy game around gets even better.

If that doesn't give you a good idea of how well we fared in the review, here's a little blurb from the article itself:

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar is great.  Great, great, great.  I'm going to go into a lot more detail in this review as to why it's great, but I thought I should get that point out of the way right off the bat.  If you at all like strategy games, you should at least check it out.

Some of the major points the reviewer liked about the expansion were the campaign, super abilities, planet types and asteroids.  It's an excellent review if you're still on the fence about the game.  And again, Dark Avatar has received higher marks than the original game did.  Dread Lords received an A- from UGO last time around.  So if you liked Dread Lords, the opinion thus far is unanimous that the expansion is even better than the original!

Oh, and if you don't like it, Adam promises to come beat you up!

LoL, I just started reading the Ugo review, and I really like this guys style of writing.

"If you at all like strategy games, you should at least check it out. If you like turn-based strategy games, it's the current cream of the crop, so you have to play it. And if you're already a Galactic Civilizations II fan, and you don't play Dark Avatar, I will come to your house and fight you. That's no lie."

Its already clear that DA is a shoe-in for some Major Awards at the end of 2007, so start looking for a new Trophy cabinet guys

These are awesome reviews that more than compensate up for the Huge, Huge, effort and innovation put into DA. The other Major TBS Titles really do now have to sit up and take notice of the culture behind the Stardock success and the close integration with its fan base. The Methodology works, keeps fans extactic, and feeds into the bottom line. Rival Finance Directors take note, there are more ways of enhancing the bottom line than simplistic minimum costs, tired poorly thought out "expansion packs", and maximum price that the market will take.

They change the tired old Industry model as Stardock has done, or now be vulnerable to a fan backlash, and a bonus reduction at end of FY.

All Just Rewards for the obvious genuine, and much appreciated by the fanbase, dedication to the Product by the Stardock Dev Teams.

We had a trophy cabinet, but Kris took it home when we moved offices.

DA is just a great package. It's one of those rare expansions (just like DL was one of those rare games) where everything just works, there's no (or few) hassles involved, everything you want is present and easy to access, and the deceptively intuitive interface gives way to enormous depth the deeper you choose to dig. On top of that it allows for endless customization. The only reasons I could possibly think of for not loving DA are a lack of interest in strategy games, or a predilection for real-time strategy over 4x games - but even the latter reason should probably be reconsidered in this case. It simply gets too much right to pass up, in my opinion.
