From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

For the past few weeks we've been running a little contest, mostly just for fun, for icon artists to come up with a handful of St. Patrick's Day themed icons for the desktop.  The rules were they had to cover the 5 major desktop icons, be submitted to the Misc Icon gallery by March 17th and have a preview image posted to the contest forum thread.

We ended up with five qualifying entries competing for 3 prizes (1 year WinCustomize subscriptions).

To decide the winners, our moderator team cast their votes on their top 3 favorites.  Additionally, we ran a short poll this week asking for the users to vote on their favorite as well.  Typically, when we run a contest, the views of the moderators and judges vary to some extent from results of public voting.  This time however, the results for both judge voting and public voting were identical.  The top three in both sets were spot-on the same, with the 4th place in user voting being a tie.

Here are the results:

1st Place - Po'Smedley
2nd Place - RPGFX
3rd Place - gh33da

Congrats to all of our winners!

The follow-up poll question is:

Should we run similar mini-contests in the future?

UPDATE: Po'Smedley has decided to give away his winnings from the icon contest!  Check out his thread here  on how you might get the 1 year WC sub (and a bonus premium suite).

i would definitely say yes! this can really bring the community closer together!I think it's fascinating to see the unique talents of each of these of artists!it also shows that each one of these artists push each other to be the best they can be.not everyone has their level of skill, but for the rest of us that do not do what they do,let us do what we should... give them our respect and admiration!

Everyone's a winner in these kind of things. People are encouraged to skin and submit their ideas. Look at the great offerings we had not only for this event but for Valentine's, Christmas, and Halloween. I can hardly wait for the next holiday. And if I ever win the lottory I'll offer a super prize for a complete suit just for my birthday!

Having a mini contest adds to the entire event. Someone who might be afraid to go up against the "heavies" in the yearly contests can hone their skills in smaller events where the pressure is far less. I love not only the fantastic skins that come out of these things but also seeing the new names. Congrats to all the participants and to the administrators for hosting this fun event.
