Now with progress bars and timers!
Published on April 2, 2007 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

Ever since we launched Dream.WinCustomize.com earlier this year, we've been working on improvements to our upload system to handle large file sizes.  In the past, users would just have clicked the submit button, waited and hoped it all worked.  There was no display of upload progress, and for users with exceptionally large files to upload, often the browser would timeout.  Well, we've made some steps to alleviate those problems.  Now, there is an upload script in testing that shows a progress bar indicating how much of the file has been uploaded, the current transfer speed, as well as a time-left and time-elapsed counter.  Improved error messages have also been added to help troubleshoot upload issues.

Net Dev is really close to signing off on the new upload script as "done" and have it be the main method people use to upload content, but before that happens, we need a week or two of heavy testing/usage to make sure we catch and iron out all the kinks.  That's where you come in.

For the next few weeks, when you find yourself looking to upload something to the galleries, please use this link:

Also, post any feedback or issues you may encounter with it to the comments section below.

The old system actually wasn't checking file types properly, so it was letting everything through.

I've just updated the system to take .xtreme files as well

I think that .gadget files should be allowed in the Sidebar Gadgets gallery

I tried four times to upload two with Maxthon and two with IE7 and all four failed using the new upload. The old upload worked fine on the first try.

Would it be possible to add a version number to the beta upload page? It would help users know when the page has changed and when to try again.

Ask and you shall receive; well sort of.  I added the date and time of last update for that page.  Since I am sure not everyone writes down or remembers the last build number, I figured having the date and time may be the next best thing.

Just in case someone didn't realize, we updated again this morning.

Keep us informed if you have any issues, and we'll be keeping an eye on errors that arise.

Great, thanks. And I was able to upload my 33MB dream this afternoon using upload2, and it also showed me the progress of the upload.

I just uploaded a screenshot and it worked great. Real fast and the upload progress bar is a nice touch. Thanks for all your hard work to get things working.

I still cannot get this upload to work. I get a script error that Ajax uploader is not an object.

Frankief,  Is it possible for you to take a screenshot when you get this error?

This upload just won't work with Maxthon. I tried again tonight and got the same script error. I did do a screen shot but don't know how to include it here. After closing Maxthon and openning IE7 the upload was flawless. The script error says, Ajax upload service is null or not an object. I did upload one file using Maxthon and the old upload link.

I can't upload at all. Old page, new page, IE, FF, XP, Vista, different pcs etc. On all variations the submit button is disabled.

Snowman reports the same problem and everyone else is uploading ok so is this related to moderator logon?

Got stuff to upload

Frankief:

We currently only officially support FireFox, IE 6, and IE 7.  This is still true even though Maxthon is based on the IE browser engine.  With that being said, I have tried freshly installed Version: 1.5.9 (build 80) of Maxthon before a new build went up this morning and after and both attempts to upload worked.  It is possible that an Add-In or some other piece of software on your system was/is causing the issues.  I say this as some of the information that your browser is sending back to us is not what we would normally see from IE or FF.  We did do some tweaks over the last week that may help, so please give the new build a try, and if it is still failing, I would suggest using one of the browsers that we support on this site.

Fuzzy:

Thanks for letting us know about the problem.  We put up a new build this morning, and hopefully that new build should enable the Submit button.

Thanks for everyone's time and patience,

Dean
