Already working to compete with Apple on the downloadable movie front, Amazon.com is looking to take on the digital music giant with a new service that will sell DRM-free.  The new store is supposed to launch this May, and Amazon has spent a considerable amount of time in the past few weeks talking to music labels in an attempt to get them on-board with the new service.  This however isn't a new initiative for the online retailer, as they've been working diligently for the last 18 months to get some sort of music service off the ground.  This latest push is just particularly aggressive.

If the service does launch on time, current guess is that it will carry music from EMI, the label already on-board with the DRM free initiative on iTunes, various independent labels, and there's even a rumor that Vivendi Universal may be interested (though opinion is that it is unlikely).

Will anyone be able to take a chunk out of Apple's massive marketshare?

Very good point, they've got it all tied up.If I could sync my iPod with another media player I would ,so for the time being it's iTunes. It's the only reason I keep it on my pc.
Are iTunes tracks DRM free yet? I read recently of a court case in Denmark in which they lost and have had to remove DRM.Does this just apply in Denmark or is it global now?

I think people who say they don't like iTunes don't use iTunes. My music database is nearly 12,000 songs, and I find iTunes an excellent way to manage such a large list. I work part-time as a mobile DJ and use iTunes during gigs. It works well to cue songs and has a good shuffle feature. The whole DRM debacle is irrelevant to me since I burn music purchased via iTunes to CD and promptly rip to MP3. Until the guys in black trenchcoats come to my house to make me stop, Molon labe.

I don't dislike it,in fact I agree that it is very good.I also have a huge data base of songs and it makes them very easy to manage.Thing is I have Philips wireless music receiver hitched up to my hi-fi in another room in my apartment and iTunes doesn't work too well with this.Well...the mp3 files do ,but not those daft m4a ones.

My Zune Kicks some major iPod booty. don't get me wrong, i love iTunes, but i straight up refused to pay for a music player that formats itself when i want to add music. The Zune Software is basically a nicer looking WMP, and i have yet to have an issue with it or the Zune itself. the sound quality is amazing, the video quality is as well. iTunes is what i use for the PC when im not on the run, when i am, it's all zune. The Zune Marketplace is simple, and wireless transfers rock! I don't see Amazon taking out iTunes and iPod unless they get into an agreement with a major MP3 player manufacturer, or construct their own.

i don't like iTunes tbh, and I used it for quite a few weeks when I had a problem with WMP 11 . But i switched back as soon as I managed to fix WMP. I just love WMP11. It's library features are awesome, much better than iTunes' ones, imo. And WMP looks infinitely better than iTunes!! I have to use iTunes for synching and podcasts, but i wouldn't if that was possible in WMP.
but that's just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and experiences.
as for Amazon taking on iTunes store, maybe, over time.. like a couple hundred years?!
