From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Ah consolidation!
Published on May 7, 2007 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

Just a few weeks ago, popular social networking site MySpace blocked all videos hosted by digital media storehouse Photobucket.  Evidently the vast majority of all of Photobucket's traffic comes through in the form of MySpace referrals, though neither company will comment on the matter.  With this recent bout of fighting between the two companies, the last thing anyone expected was a merger.  Well, that's what just happened.  News Corp, the parent company of MySpace, shelled out the cash to pick up Photobucket, though it's unclear whether or not they met the $300 million asking price.

The news is of particular interest to other services that piggy-back on the success of sites like MySpace.  If you make something cool enough that relies on MySpace, will News Corp buy you?

Why does everyone on this site hate Myspace??

In my case, it's because I agree with Jafo ...in that it's a cesspit. A boil on the buns of humanity. Hunting grounds for paedophiles and sicko's.

This was a really bad/poor move by Photobucket, imo.

Me thinks a better idea for WC users to upload their images to the forums would be a 'browse to' function that would allow us to select the images from our own PC's and add them to our posts that way. I've seen it working on other sites and it would be the ideal solution here for those who do not like PhotoBucket, ImageShack, etc.

All who agree to keep it in the family say 'Aye'

****uh oh, I dun gone n' started another petition. *****

The same way you browse for images to upload to WC. Put them right here...good idea. Easier too...eliminate the middle man so to speak.

And I just last week opened an account with photobucket....and now it shall be closed...I too want to stay as far away from MySpace as possible.

And the responsibility needs to be put where it belongs...on the parents that allow their children to access these sites. They are letting the net raise their kids. Shame on them.

Who actually uses Photobucket?

Internationally, it's UNUSABLE. Slowest transfer rates I've ever seen- it's like 56k.
All hail imageshack.

Me thinks that the amount of server space needed just spiked again.

Maybe one of those new fangled subscriber features?

I agree with starkers and Zubaz leave out the middleman and do it onsite. That might be just the thing that would push me to finally subsrcibe. Yes that would mean a massive spike in server space but I assume(yes I know the riddle) that most of the subscribers and many of the other users would appreciate that sort of improvement. And yes Zubaz I would also make it a subscriber feature, to expensive otherwise.

Most definitely a subscriber feature only...heck, I'd even be willing to pay extra on my sub for the privilege of not having to first upload to a third party to display images in posts here. Never liked that idea much to begin with so have never bothered with the idea of adding pics to my posts.

It seems there are others who would appreciate the 'browse to' feature being added to the forums, so perhaps it could be implemented as a subscriber only feature in WC's site revamp/upgrade for 2008....

Please, please, please Mr Stardock, can we, can we please have it.

We already have a photo gallery feature for subscribers

I know this is available on personal pages, and thank you for responding, Zoomba, but the feature of which I speak is where subscribers can browse for images on their PC's and upload them directly to the forums via a browse to/add image button....a one/two click operation rather than having to go through the rigmarol of uploading images to Imageshack and/or Photobucket first.

Prior to this 'MySpace buys Photobucket' thing, I saw several complaints about it and Imageshack not functioning as desired/required, so I imagine an on-site 'browse to' feature would be a welcomed addition to the forums for many subscribers. I don't know how much extra coding and bandwidth this would require, but perhaps a $25.00 premium subscription would help offset the additional costs. I for one would be more than happy to pay the extra five bucks to have access to such a function.

Well we have three Aye's....so come on peoples, who agrees/appreciate our own on-site image upload feature?

Thats how the Personal pages works now...but I assume you would rather the function extend directly into the forums...as going to PP first is little different to Photobucket, etc, anyway...
