From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

One of the less-publicized aspects of the Windows Vista launch was the Vista Family Discount Program, where if you were an owner of Windows Vista Ultimate, you could buy up to two licenses for Windows Home Premium for just $50 each, a massive price break versus full retail price.  The program aimed to encourage households with multiple PCs to be early-adopters and move to Vista in the first few months after launch.  A great deal really if you were looking to jump on the bandwagon early, or even if you just wanted an extra license or two "just in case."

Well, if you were thinking about taking the plunge and getting a few cheap Home Premium licenses, you're almost out of time.  The discount program ends at 11:59pm PST on June 30th.  After that everything jumps back up to full price.

What's not mentioned here is this only applies to retail copies of Ultimate. If you purchased an OEM copy, or it came with a new computer, you are not eligible. Since I build my own computers, I always purchase OEM copies (or use Linux), figuring I need to provide the support myself anyway. This really does kinda hose the DIY of the computer population who want to get the rest of the family on Vista.

No thanks! Took almost five years for XP to be debugged to where it's somewhat functional. I'll pass and and maybe in five years buy Vista. If I need a change of scenery, I'll boot into Linux (for, I am a dual-boot'n-fool).
