From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
I'd get one if I had the money.

It's Monday, so time for yet another poll.  Last week I asked everyone to give the site an overall grade for quality of service provided.  It's been just almost 6 months since the new site went live and I wanted to get a feel for how everyone feels  we've been doing since then.  In general, everyone seems pretty happy with how things have been working.  In total, 77% of you thought we were either doing "Good" or "Excellent" and only a handful of you actually gave us a failing grade.  I'm really glad everyone has been so happy with the site this past half year and I hope we continue to meet and exceed your expectations.

Here's the breakdown in pretty picture form:

This week the poll is simple.  Did you get an iPhone this weekend?  With all the hype spinning around the product launch which kicked off this weekend, I was wondering if anyone here actually made the plunge and spent a month's salary on the latest wonder-gadget from the folks at Apple.

Results next week.

Yes, there are quite a few people out there that just have to have the latest gadget. Nothing wrong with that, we all do at certain times.

There is alot of hype out there, mostly coming from Apple. This product seems to be one that the consumers really need to research before buying.

If I read the reviews right you have to sign a 5 year service contract with AT&T. How many of you with cell phones keep the some one for that long? The technology chages to quick and often to be tied down like that.

You sign a 2 year service contract with AT&T, like just about any other phone service out there.  Apple however has signed a 5 year exclusive with AT&T, so they're the only service that can sell them until 2012.

I like the newest whiz-bang gadgets like most, however, 600 bucks is a lot to shell out for a phone/ipod. I've got a phone and I've got an ipod, and i can get on the internet right here at my trusty pc...WOULD i get one, if I had disposable income...yes. WILL i get one...no.

Thanks for the correction Zoomba, just goes to show you either I read what I wanted to or the reviewer got it wrong. Not to be the square peg in the round hole, but I have a Tracfone, no contract.

If im going to spend 600 dollars it sure as hell wont be on a phone.

Amen to that. On the other hand, these days you're not really buying a phone; you're practically buying another computer!

If you make 5 to 6 hundred dollars a month it's time to get a second job

As for me I usually go out and get the latest gadget (3 RZARs and a SLVR) but I think I'm going to wait on this one.

I'd buy one but unfortunately I lack the money to get it, that and I live in the UK where we don't have iPhones.

If I got one, I'd only use it as an uber-iPod. AT&T is the worst choice they could have had for a provider. But the reason the iPod is ubiquitous is because it wasn't locked into a single source vendor. Locking the iPhone to AT&T for 5 years was a terrible mistake.

It's an hysteria-fed fad, just like the iPod.

Anyone rushing out frantically to buy one probably needs a priority-reset button.

How long till the first mugged-for-iPhone reports?

iPod and its 'signature' white earphones.....didn't shout out 'STATUS SYMBOL'...it shouted instead 'MUG ME'...

I doubt I'll ever buy anything spelled with a lower case 'i'.

Maybe I'm just an iDiot ....

A friend of mine said the same thing. They don't call it a craze for nothing.

Unless it's unlocked, it's not an option

Besides, it's a first gen product, never buy a first gen product

Well, since I'm in Canada I don't even have the option yet... seriously, wth is that about!? We're right on top of you. There are people who live on one side of the border and work on the other. Why in the name of all that's good and pure do we always have to wait longer (latest rumor puts the iphone in winter up here) for the latest stuff??

Anyway, my rants aside, to be honest I just don't need half the stuff the iphone has and it's missing half the stuff I'd want in a device like that. So I'm gonna wait for either v2 or maybe something better that'll come along. For now I'm satisfied with what I have.

What I don't understand is why did apple make that contract with AT&T? I mean am I really suppose to believe that AT&T gave apple enough money to cover all those users that would've bought the iphone if it were available from other providers for 5 years!?! 'Cause I don't see any other reason why apple would want to limit the iphone to one, apparently not very good, network.
