From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
I'd get one if I had the money.

It's Monday, so time for yet another poll.  Last week I asked everyone to give the site an overall grade for quality of service provided.  It's been just almost 6 months since the new site went live and I wanted to get a feel for how everyone feels  we've been doing since then.  In general, everyone seems pretty happy with how things have been working.  In total, 77% of you thought we were either doing "Good" or "Excellent" and only a handful of you actually gave us a failing grade.  I'm really glad everyone has been so happy with the site this past half year and I hope we continue to meet and exceed your expectations.

Here's the breakdown in pretty picture form:

This week the poll is simple.  Did you get an iPhone this weekend?  With all the hype spinning around the product launch which kicked off this weekend, I was wondering if anyone here actually made the plunge and spent a month's salary on the latest wonder-gadget from the folks at Apple.

Results next week.

Can't believe there is so much made about this device. Ditto to most of the comments above. Think I'll wait till the version with the Terra-former, Transporter and universal Translator comes out and get it only when they rename to the iT.

I'm thinking about getting a Motorola Q from Amp'd, along with a Motorola stereo Bluetooth headset.

I'll admit Apple's smart phone looks nice, but if it doesn't do what *I* want, why should I pay US$600?

I cant wait to see what the competition bring out! Apple always win on the hype but their products are a long way from being the best. They sell to and cater exclusively for the fashion-following sheep and people who buy brands not products.

Not available here in Oz, but I wouldn't have one even if it were....not even if it were given to me, free, for nix, gratis, etc. I've never carried a phobile mone, and no gadget weighing in at an enormous $600 US is gonna convince me to suddenly become fashionable. That translates to around AU$900, and no over-hyped/over-priced new fangled gizmo is gonna prompt my (non) desire to keep up with the Jonses...in this case, Jobses...it ain't never gonna happen.

Fashions/trends come and go, but I've always been a shorts/jeans and T-shirt type of bloke, so no amount of marketing gobbledegook/hype has a hope of transforming me into one of the 'in' crowd/mindless sheep.

Just wait and see the service At @ T provides after the first or second year of all this. Your phone will be useless unless you live under a tower. If it is even still in 1 piece then. I have gone through a phone a year for bout 10 -12 years now. Thats over $6,000.00 in iphones for the next decade. I think I'll take the opt out road.

Zubaz looks toward Island Dog enviously and put on his running shoes.

Island Dog reminds Zubaz of his Martial Arts background, and urges him to "try it".

I didn't buy a brand, I bought a product.  It didn't matter to me if it was made by Motorla (which I have a Q as well), or any other manufacturer.  I'm not an Apple fanboy by any means, nor am I hater, the same goes for Microsoft.  Most people who criticize the iPhone are doing so based on their opinion of Apple, much in same way people talk about Vista based on their opinion of Microsoft.

Simple answer "NO".

I think that the iPhone is a great thing to have, but here in SA it's not that cheap. I have seen photos, vidoes, blogs and the works relating to the iPhone and like it so far.

Now, although I wouldn't go and buy one right now - I just want to ask something.
Are there any bugs with this thing? Are there any small problems that it has. This could be in terms of reliablity, style, ergonomics (I hope that's the right word ) etc...

Whiterabbit, blame your government.

As a man who travels between the US and Canada regularly for business, I can assure you that you have a terrible monopoly controlled cell phone system (even worse than our cable/dsl Internet system). Just compare the rates for data (unlimited!) at t-mobile in the USA versus your Rogers, etc. plans (NO UNLIMITED DATA plans period!) in Canada.

Your government won't let other vendors compete in Canada, so you guys really get hosed when it comes to your cell phone service.

I hope it changes soon, because the price you pay per megabyte there is OUTRAGEOUS.

The answer is most certainly YES...as this device, like all others, was made by human beings.

I bought an ipod not for the status but for the functionality, ease of use, durability, and compact size for what it offers,,,, theres no other video,MP3 player of its size or capacity..at least not that ive seen.... for these reasons I bought it...and its one of the best tech investments ive made .....I work construction and it has taken more abuse than any of the other portable video/mp3 players ive owned and keeps on rocking...when the others failed....and theres crap loads of accessories for it unlike most the others.....

the iphone? looks like more than i would need... call me silly but... i use my phone to make "phone calls"...not cook dinner, wash the car or any of the millions of functions phones have now. now if i needed a new hand held PC. il look it's direction.. but my tungsten is still running ok....
