The "social web" fad continues with seemingly a new networking site popping up every other day, each offering it's own take on how to connect you to your friends and colleagues. Today, a new site joins the list; Spock. Spock is a little different from most social sites though. Instead of forming communities like MySpace or Facebook, it's a people indexer and relationship mapping tool like LinkedIn.
Spock scours the web for mentions of full names, and works to match as many results to the same person as possible. In theory, if you were to search for the name "Robert Scoble" (a fairly well-known and well-documented technology blogger, you'll see a profile that is partially built by automatically indexing popular social sites, and part contributed by himself and by other users. The result is a search engine with a surprising number of accurate profiles on individuals. I even found myself in there with some of my current information automatically indexed.
In a world where your online profile becomes more and more important, part of the challenge is getting out there and taking control of the information that's out there and how it's presented. Spock is the latest tool in helping you consolidate your online persona.
Since it just went into beta today, the site is under heavy load and you may hit errors. But bookmark the site and check it out when you have some time in the next few days, it's an eye opener to see what's out there about you, free for the world to see.
