Web ads can be funny?
Published on August 21, 2007 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

Ads that make us laugh are usually a heck of a lot more effective, and much better received by the viewer than ones that bore us or get in the way.  Superbowl ads are a perfect example as they're usually talked about for days or even weeks after the game is over.

Google, current advertising mega-giant on the web, realized this and has signed a deal with Seth MacFarlane, creator of the popular Fox animated series "Family Guy" to do a series of video shorts for the AdSense network that will play along with either a video ad or some sort of text ad, encouraging users to see the ad to get to the cartoon.

Would you mind seeing video ads on websites if you got a funny cartoon or video to go along with it?  It's almost like you'd be watching television.

Content is always king.
If Google is using everything they know about me (search, mail, documents, calendar, iGoogle, customized news feeds, RSS reader, pictures, video, and blog) to target funny ads . . there's a good chance I'll watch and laugh.  The trick is to make them as unobtrusive yet functional as their text ads.

That being said, it's amazing to me how I can filter out the google ad blocks better than non-google ads.  I am so used to targeting them as ads and ignoring them that I only "see" the non-google ads (then ignore them).

I don't think it is very good. It's humor/talent that I could be enjoying with my $129.00 a month cable bill, mostly commercial free. If all the good stuff is online and I can dump cable, I'm all for it.

They already are bleeding me through 2 arms and 2 legs. I only got 1 member left for them to go for...

problem is,the ratio of content to ad...usually in these situations, its worse than tv.(and tv is worse than ever)

An original episode of Star Trek ran 51 or more minutes...now because of greedy programmers its cut to around 45 minutes.

The problem is that Family Guy and even American Dad are not that funny, so you are going to have animated ads that suck.

Yeah, we get that crap here in Oz....it's as funny as an upchuck in your space helmet, a steaming wet turd in your wet-suit.

Damned mongrel programmers put it between Lost and Stargate, so we have an hour of total bollocks as filler and it's a damned insult to a moron's intelligence, much less anyone with half an ounce of sense.

So does my mother....Family Guy came on one night while I was at my PC waiting for Stargate Atlantis to start, and she asked: "What the hell were they thinking to come up with such tripe?"

My reply was: "It's quite evident, mother dear, they simply weren't thinking at all.

Google's doing more adverts on YouTube also. They'll be using 'overlay' ads which I think are better than those pre-roll ads.LINK
