About two weeks ago we underwent a bit of a shift in the sort of news that goes up on the front page of WinCustomize. Where it was exclusively tech news gathered from around the web, it has become pretty much just skinning news centered around the community and what it's currently doing. After two weeks with the new format, we've already seen a jump in discussion on front page items, and the response overall has been pretty positive. But we still wanted to get some better feedback on what people actually wanted on the front page.
So last week we asked what sort of mix of Tech vs Skinning news you'd like to see on the front page of the site. We went from one extreme to another (100% tech or 100% skinning) and covered everything in between. Interestingly enough, this was one of the first polls I can remember where there wasn't one option that was the run-away winner. Here's the pretty picture breaking it all down:
It was a near-tie between having a 50/50 and a 75/25 split between skinning and tech news. And outside of the one or two people who said we should only update the front page of the side once every blue moon, it's pretty clear that the previous approach of mostly tech coverage wasn't the way to go. We'll be leaning toward the 75/25 split going forward, still mostly covering skinning, but tossing in interesting tech news whenever it comes up (I mean come on, how can you pass up news of an invisible toaster, or a LCD projector that looks like R2-D2?).
Thanks to everyone who voted in this week's poll. What are your thoughts on the results?
