One of the oldest (and still actively developed) audio players is celebrating its 10th birthday today with the launch of a new version. Winamp 5.5 left beta and was declared "final" by the guys over at Nullsoft today. This new version though isn't just a quick rinse and polish of the last stable version, 5.5 sees Winamp really make a play at the centralized media center application market. They've taken a lot of the disparate services associated with Winamp and consolidated them to sit within the application itself. They're also taking advantage of their relationship with AOL (AOL bought Nullsoft some time ago) to get content that way.
Of note, Winamp 5.5 now includes:
- Support for multiple devices, including iPods
- Access and share your music and videos with Winamp Remote
- Integration of Shoutcast audio & video channels
- Play and Playlist the best music on the web with Media Monitor
- Receive dynamic song recommendations
- Control Winamp from your browser with the Winamp toolbar.
Also included is a completely new skin to show off all the new components of Winamp. Of course, there's a free and a Pro version. Pro gives you the ability to burn CDs, rip tracks etc.
Remember, we have a sizable gallery here at WinCustomize dedicated to WinAmp skins. Here are a few of the most recent additions:
