From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

Last week, I floated the idea of bringing back the WinCustomize annual CD compilations and wanted to get everyone's input on whether or not it would be a worthwhile effort.  While it wasn't the run-away margin I was hoping for, it looks like there is definite interest in us reviving the long dormant CD package.

Here's the pretty picture

I was surprised that so many people voted "no" personally.  If you voted for "No" would you mind sharing your thoughts on the matter?

I voted no mostly because I think they're kind of unnecessary nowadays. A CD collection was great back in the day when many people were on dial-up, but now so many people are on high-speed internet that it isn't hard or time consuming to just download the skins you want from the website.

I voted "no"

I like the concept of a Gift CD/DVD instead..
- Include a version of WB that only runs those skins.
- Include one MyColors suite
- Include a coupon for the "full" version of WB (or ODNT or WC subs)

*for extra bonus points, let me pick a few skns to add of my own.

The skins I want I have and have already burned to CD.
The only way I'd buy a CD/DVD was to get an exclusive skin or two on it. [But then you'd have folks not buying the CD bitching about what they didn't get.  Screw 'em.]

I voted no because there is no way anyone would be able to select a combination that would work for everyone. My tastes vary dramatically at times. Sometimes its months before I see a WB that will catch my eye enough to download while at other times it seems every one that is created is *perfect for me.

I would definately get a CD that had Vista/WB6 skins only.

I voted yes for a couple reasons.  One, it helps support the site and two, it makes it easier to have a hard copy instead of downloading and storing it to a dvd/cd.

I was going to post why I voted yes, but Zoomba was wanting people to explain why they voted no.

I voted no.

1. It's just too easy to make your own CD.

2. The CDs were great when most people were on dial-up, that's just not the case anymore.

3. Like My Secret, I don't think that someone at Stardock will have the same tastes in Windowblinds as I do.

4. I don't want to see all the hoopla in the forum when the CD comes out and so-n-so's Windowblind didn't make it on the CD when it's so much better than this other persons work that did make it on the CD.

5. Windowblinds become dated waayyy too fast. I no longer have any version 2 blinds. I have less than a handful that were version 3, maybe a dozen that were version 4.

I voted no because like others have said it's just so easy to collect what you like yourself especially since the change made to the site where you can see 100 skins at a time. So, no...I would definitely not pay for a CD compilation.

I find this a very odd question after all it's about supply & demand ain't it, i'd assume there was no demand for said cd's so they were discontinued

I voted no. Just because everything is available right here pretty much, so pointless to have it on CD.

I would have to agree with what's been pointed out already - broadband almost eliminates the need for CD's. Also, with the search features that you have on the Wincustomize site, it's easy to just go and find what you are looking for anyway. I'm not sure of any value-added features that a CD might bring, although Zubaz had some great ideas there. I might order a couple CD's if it had a limited version of WB or ThemeManager along with some skins - I think they'd make great Christmas presents.

I also like Zubaz gift idea, a great way to promote WB to new users.

I voted "no" cause its easy to just download the skins and the site is always good updated. I think many people wont buy the CD because they can download the skins. I understand why people say yes but I think its no need to bring it on a CD.
