From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
I want one....

Announced last year, Microsoft Surface is probably one of the most interesting upcoming technologies we've heard about in quite a while.  Imagine an iPhone with it's fancy touch screen interface, but as large as your dining room table.  Every day at WinCustomize, we're trying something new in the world of Human-Computer Interface design.  Our skins, icons, themes and more strive to transform the Windows experience into something else.

However, we're still limited by the framework and interface method originally introduced in the early 90s.  Surface represents a completely new way of interacting with technology.  A natural and intuitive way.

At CES this year, Microsoft had Surface on display at its booth for folks to play with and take for a spin.  If I had been at CES, this would have been my #1 stop on the show floor.

Tom Warren of Neowin.net was at the show and was able to play with a demo unit.  While they had criticisms over responsiveness of the demo unit, there was high praise for the demos that were available.  Hit the link below for full commentary, and some demo videos from the show.

The coolest bit?  Microsoft thinks we'll start to see this tech used by businesses by the end of 2008.

Sorta like a wacom Cintiq tablet... although in watching the painting demo... looked like it was lagging horribly. Will be interesting to see where we are in 5 years though for sure.

Interesting, but can't they think of something better to spend their resources on? Seems kind of useless and childish to me.

I'd love to see my kitchen counter with one of those built in.

Mmmm...lads, it's further along than you might think. I'm all for it, as the centerpiece of a "digital home." I think Microsoft is taking a very long-term view of the market and technology and has a definite goal they're working towards.
