Wow, that's a lot of downloads
Published on February 19, 2008 By Zoomba In WinCustomize News

Have you ever wondered what exactly the most popular skin ever posted to WinCustomize is?  Well, turns out it's XP Professional III by adni18, last updated in July of 2007.  Right behind that is another adni18 skin, then a treetog skin from 2005, a gef DX theme from 2005 and so on.  It's actually very interesting to see what skins were the most popular and how they've stood the test of time.

We actually have a page that shows you exactly that:

Most Popular Skins of All Time

Here are the Top-10...

Skins from 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004 and even 2002 (CopperdeckII Cursor by treetog).  It's really kind of amazing how items that old are still at the top of the list after all these years.

And for you number crunchers out there, if you just look at the top 5 on the list, they account for 3.3 TERRABYTES of downloads.

That is wicked cool!  Thanks.  Time to fire some of these up in Vista and see how they aged.

Zoomba . . is there a way for you to show us what were the most popular skins by year?  I'd imagine that XP Pro III had most of it's downloads in 2007 but what was the top skins in following years?  One **really good** year can skew the results for years to come

I'd have to do some databse digging to get that sort of info.

I'm also curious about how much we've served up over the years in terms of raw data.  And then compare day to day (i.e. "Yesterday, we served 20 terrabytes of WindowBlinds skins...").

Some very fine examples you have found Zoomba.

Every once In awhile I will visit Todays Favorites and look at what was downloaded Yesterday, Past 30 Days and Hall of Fame by skins library. Interesting to see that some of the older skins are still being downloaded.

When something is good, how old it is or when it was made doesn't diminish the talent of the skinner or the quality of the work that was done.

Once again, congrats to all skinners past and present.

The old classics never die.

My Fave desktop is still TurtleSoupII Mariner By Doodle Bug For Litestep (which I ported over to DX), Combined with a closely matching WB By Basj. Ive recently been revisiting some of the old classics and upping SS of them with a "Today" twist to them. Colony was the most recent with Threads previous to that.

Art and its Beauty will stand the test of time, even tho with skins they occasionally need reworking to be utilized by the newer applications.

I would like to see possibly Artists/masters who are willing to allow their skins to be brought up to date (but dont have the time or want) maybe collaborate with modders/porters who would like to help restore some of the old classics up to date. The majority of these skins are master pieces and I would hate to see them slip in to obscurity..

Excellent idea HG. Sounds to me like a good candidate of an on going community project.

I remember when Tiggz first popped onto the scene....and I thought "bloody heck...where's this guy been hiding?"  There were no faltering steps of semi-competent goofiness, just great works from Day One....

Of course...being an 'old classic' I also remember when treetog popped onto the scene...

When Tiggz first submitted I was amazed at the quality! Tiggz is back with us, as most in the community knows, with some new creativity!! I can say similar thing for Gef, I remember his first DesktopX skin!

I was just looking at the list the other day and was amazed to see what was on it! Made me want to fire up CopperDeckII right on the spot
