From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands

From the guys who brought you Samurize comes Cairo, a new Desktop Shell Replacement for Microsoft Windows.

The goal with Cairo is to "transform your desktop from the dated Windows user-interface to a brand new system that will change the way you use your computer forever."  Pretty ambitious stuff, but looking at the concept work and screenshots they've released so far, it's at least going to be a damn pretty custom shell!

Cairo is rapidly approaching Milestone 1, and they've selected their first batch of testers.  Keep an eye on this project though as it looks very promising.  Hopefully it'll be easy to skin...

It'll be definitely worth trying. I imagine a lot of people will find it useful, since that's it's aim, but then as is usual, there'll be those resistant to change.

I for one, look forward to trying it out.

It's exciting to see how Cairo is being noticed all over the internet.

One thing about the article to point out, Cairo has no relation with Samurize. It's being developed with C# and WPF.
Also, you are using a very old design, which is not what Cairo is being coded off from currently. The image that should be shown is here:

I actually like the taskbar on the top picture, without the logo. But that's ok, because the rest is so cool!

Link doesn't work........
I would very much like to see the new look........ I'm not fond of the 'iTunes' look.

No idea why the link isn't working, it is for me. If you look in the News section of our site, you should be able to find the latest full-screen one, as well as a peek at our task management.

Oh goodie. Another shell-replacement program. Just out of random curiosity: what's wrong with the current shell-replacement programs?
on Mar 02, 2008
Ummm, just use OSX?

Is WB/Desktop X a shell replacement program? I would consider those shell enhancement programs, since they run on top of the explorer shell. litestep would be a shell replacement program, only not much big happening there in a while. I personally think it is great to have these guys working on something new. Whether or not it will be super awesome or unusable remains to be seen, but the caliber of the devs is very encouraging. The default visuals are nice and minimalistic but, if it skinnable then it doesn't really matter. If it runs lighter on Vista than the native shell then I am sure it will find a place on many PCs. Vista is begging for some performance enhancements. If it comes with enhanced functionality then that is a bonus, but honestly improved performance and an easy skinning interface would be enough to make it contender. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

So again I ask (after going through this threead) "what makes this better than the Vista Explorer shell?"

I'm not against it . . In fact, I support al;ternative shells.  But it has to do *something* better than what I have.  Can anyone tell me what that is?

Thanks!
