From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
An oldie, but a goodie...

With WinCustomize turning 7 today, I thought it would be interesting to browse through the gallery archives to see what sort of skins people were uploading back in March of 2001, with the launch of the brand new site.

When WC launched, there were only a small handful of galleries: WindowBlinds, IconPackager, DesktopX Objects, ObjectBar, PocketBlinds, LiteStep, WinStep, Wallpapers, Windows Media Player, Winamp, WebBlinds, ICQ Plus v3.  A dozen galleries to our current 50.  A few hundred skins then, to over 75,000 today.

Here are a few of the skins from March 2001 in the first few galleries launched.  Enjoy!

Cool stuff.... everything was new and exciting back then! I made one of my first DX themes in 2001, and seven years later it STILL has no comments..... hehe. WWW Link

Very cool, innovative designs back then and with some rudimentary tools (by today's standards).

Oh man... Not knowing much about Photoshop or the possibilities of 'layers' in graphics programs I made all those buttons with DesktopX itself and the Corel screenshot program because it was the fastest way for me to do such a thing back then. I had a special Wallpaper containing magic pink areas for different purposes. Go figure...

Wow! What a great flashback. I began using WindowBlinds at version 3 and to see the progression of skin technology and quality has been a great ride. Used Dangeruss' Thredz icons for a LONG time and still think they rock even today

Fireworks launcher's preview is an animated image. Is there anyway to submit a animated preview for a skin?

No, we put an end to animated previews a long time ago

Some of those early skins should really be updated to today's standard . I still think- considering the tools available at the time - those early skins were really innovative.

Good art and innovation isn't about the tools . . it's about the artist.

It would be nice to see them updated though.
