Winstep XtremeLast week, our friends over at WinStep Software released the latest version of Winstep Xtreme, 8.5.  This version is packed with great new features and a ton of cool eye candy.

Winstep Xtreme 8.5 brings Apple Dock style icon reflection to Windows, an absolutely awesome visual effect that looks good with pretty much any icon.

Here are a few highlights from the 8.5 version:

  • New optional and user configurable icon reflection effect on docks and shelves.
  • Restored the weather feed provided by the Weather Channel.
  • New customizable backgrounds for the in-shelf/dock CPU, Net and RAM meters.
  • New Dock Manager to quickly manage and locate all your docks.
  • Added a new 'NeXuS Common Preferences' tab to WorkShelf Preferences for settings common to both the docks and the Shelf.
  • Added ability to group documents from the same program into a single task icon, bringing WorkShelf's task management abilities up to par with NextSTART.

The list goes on and on, go here to grab the latest version of this great Windows Desktop replacement and check out all the latest changes yourself.

I updated to 8.5 a couple of days ago and am really impressed with the new icon reflection feature... it's just awesome, but then I've come to expect no less from Winstep Technologies as a developer of mighty fine software.

As always, Jorge, you and your team have done a splendid job and I love it...though I would appreciate the link to the OSX Leopard skin for Nexus featured in the screen shot on your home page, if you wouldn't mind. I did try searching for it myself (as well as the one above) but struck out... then I got distracted/busy and I'm still none the wiser. Thanks.

That Leopard theme is still work in progress... Couldn't finish it before the 8.5 release, sorry. Soon...

Jorge .. I cannot see any reflections , although I downloaded the U/date from your site ... Do I need to edit these myself ..?

The icon reflection effect is enabled by default on new installations of Winstep Xtreme. Anyway, for docks: right click on the NeXuS control icon -> Effects -> Enable Icon Reflection For the shelf: right click on the left mini-tab -> Appearance and Sounds -> Effects -> Enable Icon Reflection By default reflection size is 50% of the size of the icon, but you can change this in the Dock Properties panel for docks and in the Shelf Content tab in Preferences for the Shelf.

Thanks for the heads up there, Jorge... looks real neat, too, so I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for it.

Also, I'm really loving the icon reflection effect, in both Nexus and Workshelf, it adds a real classy look to these already superb apps.

Ah, but when you install Winstep Xtreme in Vista, the OS (which has always been good to/for me) becomes so much more... much more user friend lee. Although I never had issues with the Vista Start Menu/Panel, I do find myself using Workshelf to access apps and shortcuts more and more, it's that convenient... not to mention the flexibility of NextStart's more than adequate start panel, sliding across, up, down from anywhere on the screen you desire it to be. Yup, it's pretty darned good... in any OS.
