A great walkthrough of the platform
Published on June 17, 2008 By Zoomba In GalCiv II News

Today's the day Impulse launches to the public with much fanfare and celebration.  In anticipation of the release, Brad Wardell walked through what will be available in Impulse on release, and a few sneak peeks at what will be added in the comming weeks and months.

It's required reading before you get the final version later today.  It will answer a lot of questions and hopefully clear up a lot of confusion of what Impulse is, what it isn't, and what it can and can not do.  We're pretty excited about the launch coming up today and want to make sure everyone's as educated about the platform as possible.

The article comments area is also the best place to ask any lingering questions you might have!

Impulse does not accept tokens and no Political Machine 2008 on SDC - is it good for people ?

Maybe this is why my galcvi2 serial numbers were changed in the metaverse without warning.

Forgoing that, I still am willing to try this program.... so please post the link here or in a new news post. I dont want to hunt around "Impulse""driven""".net for it.

BTW I find that funny.

Steam"Powered"
Impulse"Driven"

Im guessing it was too hard/expensive ($) to buy just "impulse.com".

Anyways being a big steam user that uses steam for ever game (with the overlay), the only feature I am truly interested in is this "Dock". Is it like RKLauncher(which is but hasnt been updated in years and is unstable on my comp)

If its like that, then this might have a new home on my comp. Currently Im just using the standard windows (drag folder with shortcuts to top of desktop for a new toolbar) kinda thing.

Also, do I have to re-download Galciv2+Expansions??? From the comments that I read it appears that I would. If not please advise.

Not exactly what I meant. But I can see how it reads. lol.

Just a few quick observations: Creating a custom tab, dragging 62 shortcuts onto it from my quick launch. It is very slow to scroll around on it. Then docked it. The dock when you open the custom tab is filled horizontally and you cannot scroll around the dock pop-up to select shortcuts that aren't displayed.

But all in all I really like it.

I've just installed Impulse, and now I'm highly irritated that my TGN tokens apparently are no longer supported???

At the moment, I fail to see any real benefit, despite having read your Blog attentively, Brad. As a customer, I want to download (a) an update for my favorite game and ( maybe spent the rest of my (already paid for!) TGN tokens. I could do very well without the eye-candy, especially, since Impulse is running rather slow on an older machines such as my Latitude D600. It took 24 seconds to start-up.

You can still spend TGN tokens through the TGN website if you still have them.

I have some concerns regarding Impulse. Shouldn't customers have the option of being able to manually download update patches? Also, I did not order the CDs when I made digital purchases. I would like to either be able to download a self-extracting archive/installer with a digital purchase, or at least have Impulse be able to create self-extracting archives. I don't like having to use a program to install another.

BTW - Is it too late to pay the S&H and get the CDs after the digital purchase is made?

One suggestion with Impulse. I've been having mad problems, and it turned out it was due to BITS being turned off. Would it be possible for Impulse installation to check if the service is installed, or is this a case where I'm so much of an idiot that others wouldn't copy my idiocy?

For those having problems: check that though, it should solve your problems if that's off.

Just tried to install it. It behaves really weird on Windows 2000. Installation goes on for a very long time, showing a progress of several million percent. Both Impulse and ImpulseDock crash upon launch.

"System.DllNotFoundException: Unable to load DLL 'uxtheme.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)"

Impulse requires Windows XP or later.  You'll need to stick with Stardock Central I'm afraid.
on Jun 21, 2008
For those stuck with Windows 2000 for whatever reason, how long until Stardock Central stops working? I'd like to be able to get the "last windows 2000 compatible patch" for my games before it gets closed down.

All right, I bought Twilight of the Arnor and got the email with a link to Impulse. Apparently I have to download Impulse in order to get the game I just bought. So, i downloaded and installed Impulse. After over 30 minutes of telling me that it's "connecting" to get an update for itself, Impulse is now, extremely slowly, downloading its own update. When will I get to download my game? Who knows? This is extremely irritating and I see no reason that Stardock, which worked fine, couldn't have done the job just as well.

I liked the possibility to backup the game to disk. I don't see this possibility in Impulse. Am I right or is it hidden somewhere in that nasty colorfull design?

Just right click on the programs and select archive, as with SDC.
