From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
What do you do when there's nothing to do?

Ok, it's Monday, the week of Thanksgiving and there's no one in the office today to speak of. All the managers for our department are either on vacation all week or "working from home". It's just me, 3 new hires and 3 consultants, all of us largely twiddling our thumbs.

I finished my work for the month last week (a database tool), so all I have today is a brief review of it with one of the consultants, and that's it. I've done up the documentation, I've done all the testing I can come up with (I'll need new eyes to find all the weird errors I wouldn't think to look for), all I need now is final approval from the boss and it's "done"

So, here I sit, surfing the web (at least the sites the corporate filter doesn't block), checking email, drinking coffee and going for frequent walks.

I have Wednesday off to travel home, but considering how dead it is here this week, it looks like I'll just take off early tomorrow and drive home in the afternoon. The question now however is, what do I do with the rest of my day today, and half day tomorrow?

Maybe I can build a fort in my cubicle out of empty binders....

While it may be against company policy for you (it was at my last job), you could play computer games. Or failing that, I'm liking the fort idea

These computers are locked down so tight you wouldn't believe... I can't even install a chat program. No games for me

Though I am working on another long write-up game review for World of Warcraft (to follow up my HL2 one currently on the front page)

Magazines, silly competitions with co-workers, and coffee is what keeps me going. Any chance of sneaking in a nap?

No nap unfortunately, I'm in what is oh-so-affectionately referred to as "The Fishbowl" cubicle... no privacy at all.

Those few who are here this week are going for frequent walks, visiting the coffee cart frequently... and now we have plans to leave a bit early and hit one guy's family-owned wine shop for the evening

I trust you'll understand that I was disappointed that you distracted the thrust & hence importance of my message about freeing the marine. I have put my energy to good use in a variety of constructive ways. But what I need to know from you is what kind of fella comes around another fella's blog, lecturing, and using insults about "credentials? Is it one who is prepared to shut down his blog when the "credentials" are produced? Or is it just some bored office geek mouthing off ? No offense!

Well just keep writing articles or comment on others. But, true, the fort sounds good

Buddy, you need to find something better to do than troll posts that have NOTHING to do with what you're angry about. And from your responses on that thread, you did a lot more insulting than anyone else there. Oh, one more thing, you producing any credentials has no real bearing on anyone ceasing to blog, nor should it, you're arrogant as hell if you think it should.
