From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
I just realized how sad my life is...

Ok, it's over and done with. After years of shooting, reshooting, pre and post production work that was done in one solid chunk, making it the single largest film ever produced... Lord of the Rings is finished. All three have seen theatrical release, standard DVD release and now the extended DVD versions are all out and accounted for. Four years ago these movies started coming out to rave reviews. Nerds and geeks the world over were finally getting their day in the spotlight. Our most revered of books was finally being given the attention and love it deserved! Academy Awards have been handed out... entire books have been written on the experience of making the movies. Now it's all been handed off to us, the viewer, who will be the ones to keep it alive for years to come.

Today, since my company gave us MLK day off, I sat down and watched the cast commentary on my extended edition of Return of the King. I've watched the commentaries on all the previous ones too. When I finished, I began to think about how much time I had spent watching The Return of the King. Then I started to wonder how much time have I devoted to this entire series. Here's what I found out...

Movie Run Times (as listed by amazon.com)
The Fellowship of the Ring- Theatrical Release: 178min (viewed twice) Extended Release: 208min (viewed once through normally, once with commentary)...
The Two Towers- Theatrical Release: 175min (viewed twice) Extended Release: 208min (viewed once through normally, once with commentary)...
The Return of the King- Theatrical Release: 200min (viewed once) Extended Release: 250min (viewed once through normally, once with commentary)...

After adding it all up, I realized I've spent 2,238min... or 37.1hrs... or 1.55 days watching The Lord of the Rings.
Now, keep in mind I'm not factoring in time I spent waiting in line for the theatrical releases... or when I caught bits and pieces of it when others were watching... only the time spent watching the films themselves. If I really wanted to add the numbers for everything else together, it would probably be a much more depressing number. I'm also not counting time spent reading the books.

I don't think I've ever devoted that much time to any single task in my life. I really must have no life

Another interesting tidbit... if you add up the run times for all three extended versions, you come up with 666min. OMG! LOTR IS TEH DEVIL!!! PROOF THAT IT'S EVIL....

My friends are having an Extend-a-thon next week, and I'm looking forward to it. The thing is, I've seen them so many times, plus cast commentary, that I've spent a good part of my life watching it. Glad to have yet another fellow geek on JU

My kids, their friends and I had an "extend-a-thon" on Dec 28. It was great!!!!

Your time watching was a day off well spent!!!

The only correction I'd make to your great article would be; there are the real versions (in other words, "The Films) and the theatrical version (or short edit). ;~D

I don't know if I'd be able to survive an Extend-a-thon. That's 11hrs of solid movie watching. Even with breaks between discs (timed every 2 or so hours) I might still lose what little is left of my sanity. By the end of watching King extended, I was starting to drift off. I'd need someone next to me pinching my arm every now and then to keep me going.

To those who have done, and survived, and Extend-a-thon... you have my admiration, for you are made of sterner stuff than I!

Dont do that!  LOTR is the best!  Dont do the 666 thing on it!  The religious already are!  I hate to say this, since I read the trilogy about 10 times, I liked the movie!

It missed a lot of parts, but it was close.  At least it was better than most of the made from books movies!
