For those of you who didn't know, we do in fact have an IRC channel for WinCustomize on the official Stardock IRC server. If you haven't stopped by in the past, give it a look. I'd like to make it the main point for skinners looking for some real-time chat to gather. If you're unsure what IRC is, or how to join in on the fun, I've posted an article that should help you out. See you in chat!
It's Monday, so that means it's time for a new Weekly Poll. Last week, we asked users to chime in on whether or not they like the new forum system and layout. It seems some of our poll voting issues have been worked out as 207 of you cast a vote. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with roughly 84% of you saying they were at least "OK." Here's the breakdown: What do you think of the new WinCustomize Forums? I like them. 78 37.68% I l...
It seems Dell just can't catch a break lately. Yet another one of their laptops has bust into flames, with the battery burning straight through the bottom of the case. The report of the incident comes from a Toms Hardware forum member who was able to see first-hand the results of a burning Dell. Being the dutiful geek he is, he grabbed his digital camera and rushed to the scene of the disaster to snap a few shots. Click on the link below to read the tale of woe, and see a fe...
As a departure from the typical news about Google releasing their 2396th product, or Microsoft removing a feature from vista, today we bring you some news from the world of data security and privacy. Yesterday, it was reported that two laptops were stolen from a U.S. Navy Recruiting station in New Jersey, and another from Armstrong World Industries Inc. Between the three laptops, personal data such as addresses, names for upwards of 43,000 individuals were lost. An estimated 16,0...
Earlier this year, Microsoft rolled out the controversial Windows Genuine Advantage tool to Windows XP systems in an attempt to combat piracy of the OS. The tool, which was labeled as a "High Priority" update, despite it not resolving any security holes or bugs in the operating system, was met with a great deal of criticism and frustration on the part of both end-users and technical professionals. Despite the issues encountered with WGA, Microsoft remains committed to the Genuine Advant...
Yesterday it was the Enhanced File Dialog utility. Today, we'd like to tell you a little bit about an update we made to one our existing utilities in the Object Desktop suite; Keyboard Launchpad. Keyboard Launchpad is a program that allows the user to quickly and easily build "hotkeys" that can launch applications, open web pages, paste saved clipboards, issue system commands, control media players and much more. It is a great utility that can save a lot of time when it comes to c...
Sharman Networks, the company behind the Kazaa P2P program have finally reached a settlement with the record industry. The deal has the company paying out more than $100 million to the labels in exchange for all pending litigation to be dropped. While the record labels pushed this settlement as a victory over P2P, and tried to cast Sharman Networks in a bad light, Sharman instead pointed out that this settlement actually legitimizes P2P as a viable download medium for digital content. ...
The word on the street is that consumers may not have a choice on upgrading to Internet Explorer 7 when Microsoft decides to release it. CNet is reporting thatMicrosoft will push the browser update as a "high priority" update via the automatic update system much in the same way it pushed the WGA anti-piracy tool earlier this year. "The justification, of course is the significant security enhancements in IE 7" says Gary Schare, Microsoft's director of IE product man...
As Microsoft prepares for the juggernaut marketing effort that will accompany the launch of Windows Vista, Windows Live and Office 2007, they've popped up a preview of the new redesigned Microsoft.com. Unfortunately, if you use Firefox, you shouldn't bother clicking on that link since all you'll see is the old Microsoft site. But, if you're visiting us through IE 6 or 7, then go for it and check it out. The new site features a look more in-line with the Live sites. ...
PowerUser.TV recently passed the one year milestone having posted 52 weekly audio episodes. So after tormenting the eardrums of fans for an entire year, they've decided to move into the world of video. Now you can see the antics that typically go on when they record a podcast. This week's show talks about tech news such as the IBM PC celebrating its 25th birthday, an "expert" claiming that 40% of all World of Warcraft gamers are addicted to t...
U.S. State Department officials yesterday said that RFID equipped passports will soon begin appearing in the hands of globe-trotting Americans. The Colorado Passport Agency will be the first passport issuing authority in the country to produce the new documents, but the rest of the agencies nation-wide are expected to ramp up production soon. The passports have come under heavy fire from security and privacy experts over supposed vulnerabilities in the new chips that would allow for eas...

It seems that the article last week was fairly well received, so now we're back with week two! It was a pretty lean week so it'll be a bit shorter this time around. Microsoft marches on with it's seemingly endless stream of products bundled under the "Windows Live" brand. Today, they released their latest tool, a blogging application called Windows Live Writer. Oh come Monday, it'll be alright... come Monday I'll be... serving up another poll! Last week I tossed out the question of what version of Microsoft Windows you were currently running. We received 400 responses exactly to this poll in the week it ran, and all but two of you are running a version of Windows XP, with more of you running Pro than Home Edition. Just to satisfy your curiosity, here's the exact breakdown: What version of Mic...
