From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
And oh so much more.

This year, we're bringing back the WinCustomize Subscription Drive.  It's now been just over two years since the last time we made a dedicated push/appeal to the community to help support the site.  It's especially important this year since we've added Dreams to the vast pool of available content to download, which are very storage and bandwidth intensive, which of course is pretty expensive.

But this time around we're doing something a little different.  It's not just a subscription drive this year, it's something much bigger and more important.  We've even enlisted the participation of several of the site's Master Skinners to help us out.

The big kick-off will be this Thursday, November 1st, so be sure you check back then for the full details.  I'm pretty excited about what we're doing this year, and I think you will be too.

The hacks I have in place are as follows:

Three commands that make the scripts here think my browser is Firefox.
One to get around the fact they use the proprietary '-moz-opacity' CSS property rather than just 'opacity'

If a page can be fooled into performing better just by making it think you're using a different browser then that page is broken.

Any program can be fooled with the right commands.... doesn't neccesarily make it better.... and generally speaking, hacking scripts can lead to some unexpected bugs and/or glitches... so I can't imagine why you would have had problems

I've got a question for you BtEO, why go through the trouble of trying to make it think your browser is Firefox, just download Firefox. What browser are you using?

I use Opera rather than Firefox because the browser is about more than how it renders pages, though that's not to say Opera's rending engine is inferior. To get Firefox anywhere near the functionality of Opera that I use requires a small army of extensions — slowing Firefox considerably (it's still a good browser, but Opera is far better for me).

I'm holding back from the massively scathing comments until I see WC2K8, but I know more than enough about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to know that WC2K7 was designed in entirely the wrong fashion — i.e. making a site for a pair of specific browsers, rather than making a site that should work in all browsers, and then adding small hacks as needed for the most popular ones (because all browsers, yes even Firefox, have bugs.)

See these two posts for a little more info too:

BtEO I suppose it's all up to choice, which is one thing that I really like when it comes to most everything including browsers. Since I subscribe to WC I use it's browser to get here and do downloads. For most everything else I use IE7 especially for MS/Windows updates. Since I have DSL I also have MSN Premium from my provider available to to me.

The browser wars just never caught on with me. Be it Firefox, Opera or Mozilla, they all just look like IE7, atleast to me. Granted I'm sure they all do a few things extra, but bottom line they get you to the internet. IE has always worked for me, guess I'll stay with the one I brought to the dance.

sorry for the   but I just find fooling one browser into thinking its another is hilarious

I need a new hobby...

BtEO I suppose it's all up to choice
Which loops us back to my original point.
I'd like to use Opera; I'd like to resubscribe to WinCustomize. However if those two conflict the first will win out — there are other [Opera friendlier] places to get my skins...

I will however point out that probably a major part of the reason a small amount of sites like WinCusto end up failing in some browsers is IE's systematic failure to follow the standards in any reliable way making up their own poorly documented, but by sheer weight of user-numbers, de-facto standards which the other browser vendors have to reverse-engineer as best as possible (usually incompletely at first.)

IE is a plague on the Internet I would love to see eradicated.

meh.

You have an issue.  It's not going to fixed right away.
If I were you, I'd use Opera without the hacks.  I'd report all the errors to websupport@stardock.com ("Hi Andrew!") with screenshots, URLs, descriptions, versions, etc.

Other than that, don't subscribe or renew until WC2k8.  My father always said, vote with yoru feet and your wallet.  It's pretty dang effective.

yoru feet

need to get me some of those, sound snazzy!

back on topic.. good to see people subscribing, I paid early this afternoon, nothing seems to have happened yet other than a "in process" email.. I hope your backlogged with orders ! I'm in no hurry, been dealing with ads for years now, another few hours can't hurt.

Feels GOOD to be a subscriber!...I urge everyone if you don't already to suppport the site and a really worthy holiday cause!

i think people who have made stuff(ie...skins, walls, or both within thier currently active subscrption)and who have bought at least one product from Stardock or WC, should be eligeable for an account that you dont have to renew,,, but the skin or whatever you made has to be ranked over time to a 3 star or more to make you eligeable

This will make it both alittle more difficult to get access but at the same time make it easy on the people that complete this set of tasks
a little more simply put....people can earn subscriptions after buyng one product if they make something that becomes a 3 star piece of work or more.....

Of course this would be a secondary way to get another subscription along side the original!

its just a thought

Sublime, this place costs money to run.  Renewals and advertising bring in that money.  Giving subscriptions away puts more burden on the rest of the community.

Look at it this way, each of the skkinners that subscribe pay $20 to show their work, as much as they want, in *THE* site for Windows customization.  I think that's worth every penny.
on Nov 03, 2007
im not sayin its not worth it lol.... and i was just simply saying this on behalf of the people the feel they are forced to buy a subscription so they can enjoy this stuff...your right: wc is *THE* site!

as far as i go,,,
i dont have a problem supporting it at all! i just need to get a credit card so i can put my cash on it hehehe! im probably the only one in my fam that favors cash over plastic! so if i seem troubled about this subject im really not...

actually i think along with WC being THEE site( which it is) WC also has great prices!

that's my story too.... I don't even have a debit card for my checking account!!! I guess pre-paid debit is gonna be the way to go... hop WC takes MasterCard!
on Nov 03, 2007
lol im not the only one appearently

i wonder if AMEX has something prepaid?? the prepaid stuff sounds ligga good idea!
on Nov 03, 2007
My family and I don't do credit either.  The trick to gettin rich is spending less than you make and saving that difference.  It's meant less nice things now . . but more later.
