From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Less is more it seems.

Last week, as a follow-up to the poll regarding a cell phone theme gallery, I asked what everyone's feelings were on adding new galleries in general versus focusing in more on the galleries we already have.  The results of the poll were pretty clear and help explain the results of the cell phone theme poll.

The results were 2:1 for focusing on our existing galleries before adding anything new.

One thing I'd like to know is if you folks have ideas on how we could be focusing more on what we already have (short of code or layout changes, those are coming, but not for a few months).  Contests?  More regular features of great skins from each gallery?  I'm open to ideas here.

I think a contest would be a great idea. You can get some really nice skins out of a contest. They are fun too!

CONTESTS!

Did you know there is a skinning contest going on right now.    Just three days left in it.

Participation in contests are usually pretty low.  (

I'd like to see more user features of galleries that they think are under-served.  Everyone here is part of the community . . if you have a favorite gallery that is not getting attention then you should be highlighting what is there so that more people will can get into it.

The galleries are about the art and the artist.  It's up to the community to sing the praises or that art and those artists.

Zubaz, a very down to earth to the point explaination. Also it is really easy enough that anyone can do it. It is a shame that most of the time we go in search for the complicated long drawn out answers to what should be easy questions.

Ah'm just a simple man.

Agreed but regularly scheduled contests in each gallery category would be a way to help get more attention and submission into the lesser galleries. Even though participation would not be what we would all want at first but it would inspire people to contribute more and in time it would increase. But as far as making changes to the gallery itself, is making changes to the site itself. 1.) thumbnails should be larger for easier browsing 2.) separate gallery for dock backgrounds 3.) add the ability to search each gallery by color 3.)let the rating system decide on

whats up with the formatting in my post, the 4th post by Zubaz, seemed to format ok, but mine is all scrunched (yes scrunched is a word) together.

Not only contests for the lesser galleries, but more focus on them in general. Perhaps when a new skin is posted for a lesser gallery it is highlighted somehow, either with a post or special area simply to draw attention to other fine work besides the mainstays of WB, Wallpaper, IP, OD. Encourage people to post proper screenshots as well. There are often times I won't bother with a skin simply because the artist either got too fancy with the SS or didn't include enough information (for example a WB skin that doesn't show a window in the SS is frustrating). Some are quite creative but I think many forget that this is an important aspect of creating a skin.

One thought might be allow the site user to customize their preferences so that they can block out skins that they don't use like you can with the WinCustomize browser. For example, I don't have Dreamscape installed so I could do without seeing DS skins among a cluster of other submissions.

You can already do this. Click the "Edit" link at the top right of the "Galleries" frame to select which galleries to show/hide. As to the original question - different layouts!! I still like the older style of this site rather than the redesigned one (from a year or two ago). It's harder to search through the galleries for the content I'm looking for; it's harder to find news articles (there used to be a link for "News" which listed MANY more articles from the past month or so).

That only hides those skins from the side panel.  I think the poster wanted to hide them from things like Newest and updated etc.

It's been suggested before but I'll put it up for opinions again - PLEASE separate Icon submissions from Dock Backgrounds in the ObjectDock Gallery! (Move them to "Misc. Icons" and rename the category "Dock Icons") Would make browsing and searching for Backgrounds MUCH easier!

Robert ...there's a difference between recoding individual sections to discriminate/distinguish between different uploads eg. separating icons/backgrounds, and simple addition of further galleries for new skinnables.

The former would need to wait for a site coding rewrite, specifically....

Can we block out certain skins through a filter...so like...we won't have to see anything with the word "fractal" in it?

Yes I would really like to see that as well.
