From technology to politics to video games; these are the random thoughts of a geek with too much time on his hands
Your endless rants and whining have helped me see the err of my ways
Published on April 11, 2005 By Zoomba In Politics
This one is for you, the extreme liberals of JoeUser who have spent the past year and a half I've regularly blogged here screaming, stomping and gnashing teeth over the pure evil that is George Bush and the vile conspiracies of the Right. You have helped me further define my political views, my stances on issues and my attitude towards our government and the world at large.

Thanks to you, I intend to re-register as an Independent. That's a change AWAY from Democrat.

I grew up in a University town, an area dominated by liberal thinkers. I saw the countless campus protests all my life. I listened to my father rant and rail against Republicans. My sister went to one of the protests in Washington D.C a few years ago. Several of my friends back home are far far left animal rights and nature nuts. I lived my life in a liberal's dream location. The conservatives were few and generally laughed at, and all was well in our little blue town amidst a sea of red counties. My views fit in well, I was as left as you got and was against just about anything closely related to the Right. I was a Loopy Luddite Lefty and I admit it. But then something important happened...

I went to College, I was exposed to people with different ideas. I later moved away from my hometown, away from the Reality Distortion Field that surrounds any University town and ventured out into the wonders of the "Real World" where I was exposed to even more ideas and differing thoughts. It was from this new distance however that I began to see the sheer stupidity of some of the tactics of the left. Then I saw the way people here were behaving and realized that it wasn't something confined to the little town I came from... it was beginning to look like the insantiy was a bit wider spread.

Add to all of this the last election. Bush won again, and this time there couldn't really be any claims of "stealing" the election or whatever. Yet, most of the people I knew were still screaming, wailing, gnashing their teeth over the outcome. In fact, months later THEY STILL ARE. They try to blame absolutely everything that's going wrong in the US and the World on Bush. World hunger? Bush did it! Trade Defecit? Didn't exist before Bush! Social Security? Bush wants to kill old people! It's just plain ridiculous.

The constant complaining, the irrational hatred is just getting to be too much for me. This sentiment isn't limited to extremists in the party anymore either, we see it in Washington with Dem congressmen voting against everything Bush puts up just because it's Bush. I don't think I want to be associated anymore with a group that has made their sole platform "Everything that Bush says is wrong" It's petty, reactionary and lacks any sense of drive, vision or future. I want out. You all have proven to me that this is not a group to be affiliated with.

Now, I'm not jumping the fence to the Right. I'm still a pretty damn liberal guy on a number of issues, but I'm also reasonable enough to recognize the merits of conservative policies as well. I've grown more moderate as a result of how people here on JU, as well as those I know in real life react to politics. This is why I'm moving to Independent. Sure, I won't be able to vote in primaries, but I will feel more free to vote my mind across party lines. I won't have to deal with people calling me a bad Democrat or whatever. I'll be registered as what I am, one who thinks independently of either major party.

I voted against Bush. I disagreed with the Iraq invasion. I support ongoing efforts in Iraq to shore up the government and ensure the save eventual withdrawl of our troops when the time is right. I am against any law banning Gay Marraige as such a law is entirely based upon Religion which I feel has no place in our laws. I am against attempts to sanitize our language so as to not offend gender, race or creed since attempts to do so stifle free speech. I have a mailman damnit! Not a mailPERSON. I favor help programs for the poor and unemployed as a method to rehabilitate, not as a method to sustain them for years and years. I am in favor of revisions to Social Security to make it a more streamlined process, and less of a political mess. I support the death penalty and am pro-choice. I think we need to be consistent and strong in our foreign policies, but do not think we have the right to dictate to other nations how they should behave.

I'm done with the Democratic party until such a time comes around that it expells its crazy fanatics and actually starts addressing real issues instead of reacting to things they don't like.

Historical Accuracy: (Man I wish I remember to disable anon users more often)
I find the flat-out discounting of a good chunk of the country to be more dangerous than any of the crazier left-wing platforms. There is a fine line to walk here that you are crossing much like the extreme left is crossing. You want to swing the far other direction, which scares the hell out of me.

You would forfeit personal freedoms and rights in the interest of having a safer state. That reasoning can keep being applied to further extend government powers to an unpleasant extreme. Every time we take away freedoms to ensure or better safety, we are playing into the hands of the terrorists. They hate us because we are free. They want to impose a totalitarian control over all the world. We play into their hands when we start enacting laws that do just that. Their goal isn't to just blow shit up, their goal is to cause a change in our society. To instill fear, distrust and to help topple our freedoms. This is why we must balance measures to ensure safety, with measures to ensure freedom and equality regardless of who you are. To do any less makes us no better than the fanatics who rail against us.

We need stronger rules on immigration, better procedures to obtain documentation, we need to work WITH other nations to improve airport security as well as protect the lanes of traffic in and out of this country. We do NOT need to abridge personal freedoms to do this. Innocent until proven guilty, the right to a fair and speedy trail, the right to equal protection under the law. I would rather die in an attack as a free man than live safely in a state that has taken my freedom from me.

I would contend that we more need to pursue drastic measures to rein in your type of policies as they are more damaging to freedom and liberty than a nutjob with a bomb is. Someone attacks us and we remain free regardless. Yes, some die, but we as a people remain free. In your world we would still be attacked as it's impossible to protect against someone willing to die for their cause, but we lose our freedom as a consequence.

Very high sounding sentiments, however, let us address a more practical scenerio. That is: the FBI or CIA captures a terrorist or a terrorist sympathizer and forced to use the interrogation methods that the left advocates, does not gain information that could avert an attack that costs the lives of thousands. What if your loved ones, God forbid, were killed in the homicide bomber attack? Later, you find out that the Govt had a terrorist in custody that, if he could have been interrogated properly, could have revealed the attack particulars. Having sustained a personal loss, would you, the survivor, remain so charitable to the causes of the left? I think not. If you say, honestly, that you would still be in favor of the goals of the left, well, I can only attritube this mind set to utter stupidity.

I can not say for certain that I would remain favorable or move against my above statement. I would likely react in anger, and want everyone connected to the attack slaughtered mercilessly. That doesn't make my position right, it makes it vengance. In some cases we need to step back from immediate personal impacts and examine what would provide the greatest benefit to the US. You should not legislate for the minority in ways the negatively impact the majority.

I do not want my loss to be the catalyst that causes freedom to be erroded.

Should we ban guns based on the minority who use them to kill people? Should we ban violent video games because some kids try and immitate them? Should we ban certain kinds of music because it might inspire violence and godlessness?

Should we errode freedoms because a few might abuse them?

zoomba,

I urge you to strongly consider the Libertarian Party. By being a party of inclusion, there is room for a great diversity of thought within our ranks (and believe me, this shows up in party meetings!

Byrd has more in common with the GOP rank and file than he does the left these days. Most ex-KKK members I've met are righties. Including one on this very site.

Must be a self introspection piece there. Boo!  Go fly your sheet elsewhere.

Thinly veiled attacks against other members is not something I appreciate on my blog Myrr (or anyone else for that matter). I respect your disagreements with others but ask that you keep it to your own site.

You are still dealing in fantasy and not in reality. The left yells and screams about the infringement on their liberties in the war on terror yet they miss the urgency of the situation. The next attack (we are told that it is inevitable) when it comes will not be just 2 buildings in New York city, it will be attacks in multiple cities and the loss of life will be considerable. How do I know this, we have been told by the terrorist in videos and on the internet that this is their goal. The left seems to have forgotten that the destruction of the twin towers caused loss of life, but also losses in the economy and the psyche of our country.
We are confronted with a patient, ruthless terror network that has as a goal, the killing of Americans. The left has swept aside the dangers that the terrorist represent and is instead focused on essentially trivial arguments that should be ignored while the larger problem of the war on terror is conducted. We should be united in this, because the inevitable attacks could be horrible indeed.

Do not be seduced by the conservative evil fiends that defile the honorable American worker. Rethink your Tom foolery, as going right is severely wrong on the road of enlightenment, so remember to turn left, and head to France, where you can VOTE FRENCH!

Dr. Guy, FYI, Big changes are occurring at the U.N. The security counsel is likely to soon include Japan, FRANCE will have "two votes" to America's "one", and Israel will be "booted" out of the "EFFICACIOUS" U.N once and for all. I suppose one must take the good with the bad.

You are wise; ominous times require action in the extreme. The left should heed your warnings, but they won't. The right has also lost focus, as has the whole
Country for that matter. It's shameful. The irony is there's too much steam where unnecessary, and not enough where needed. The only way Americans can win this war on terror is uniting beyond a strong man. Bush seems boxed in, so all that can be hoped for is that Cheney becomes the next President, or maybe someone really mean, and tough. Someone with a terrifying face, and a black patch, but no claw, as we are above all a Nation of laws, and not pirates.
