Every month, a new thread goes up asking people to show off how they've customized their PC. Since it's February 1st by my calendar, that means it's time to kick off the February Desktop Screenshots thread. Get your screenshots posted for everyone to see. Show off that great skin/icon/wall combo you've discovered!

What could be more fun than thumping annoying trolls on forum threads? Well, how about making it an unofficial site holiday? If that's not enough fun, lets take it a step further and get a bunch of skinners together to make a suite of skins for this great day. Turns out, that's exactly what's been going on for the last few months. Folks like theAVMAN, Mike b1954, 2of3, rikalot, Lantec, Drill'n Boss and Po' Smedley have been hard at work building the Troll Thumping Day Sui...
One year ago today, Windows Vista was released to the public. After a tumultuous development period, users were finally able to get their hands on the next generation of the Windows Operating System. As Vista approached, we all were racing to get ready for it. WinCustomize was rebuilt, we prepared the launch of DeskScapes, and we spent weeks providing in-depth coverage of what Vista was, what it wasn't, and what it could mean for the user . So 365 days and a reported 100 m...
ObjectDock is one of those utilities that once you use it for a little while, you just can't live without it. The usefulness of having a customizable application bar on your screen for quick access to your most often used games, apps, tools and more can't be denied. I mean look at Apple, their biggest UI improvement in OS X was the Dock. ObjectDock gives that functionality to Windows users, and a heck of a lot more! On WinCustomize, digging through our ObjectDock gallery is...
Over the years, skinning has waxed and waned in popularity. Sites have sprung up, risen high, crashed and then been reborn from the ashes over the 10+ year history of Windows skinning. WinCustomize grew out of the fall of Skinz.org back in 2001. DeviantArt started as a skinning site but has turned into a digital media giant. Of the skinning sites still around, which do you feel make up the core of the community now? What are the sites you visit on a daily basis to get...
The other night, I turned on the State of the Union Address to hear what the plan was for our nation going forward into the last year of the Bush Presidency. I expected a little bit of reflection on the last 7 years, and a strong push for something new in the final year. I also expected some amusing verbal slips Unfortunately, it feels like I got neither. From what I could tell, there were three primary topics: The Economy Education The War on Terror Now, I know ev...
WinCustomize is a large and complex site with pages upon pages of content, and dozens of different ways to sort and view that content. It's so much that it can be overwhelming for even the most seasoned site veteran. Heck, internally we have trouble remembering all the different pages that exist sometimes. The single biggest offender of the multiple paths issue is the skins page... skins.aspx. If you ever look at the address bar of your browser as you bounce around the site...
With just another day left to January, it's time to see how the new year is shaping up for skins. 2008 is shaping up to be a great year for WindowBlinds skins, if this month is any indication. In the last 30 days, we've posted 18 great new skins from artists such as: SKOriginals, BoXXi, Bushman, 2of3, navigatsio, IOU, LUV01, Country Yokel, Imzadi, OFFICA WoD, sternengalaxy, jazzymjr, LightStar, theAVMAN and Stardock Design. Now, for your viewing and downloading pleasure, I pr...
Behind the front page news, behind the skins, there's a world of feverish activity lurking beneath the surface of WinCustomize. Of course, I'm referring to our forums. On the sidebar you can see what's currently being discussed, but since so much goes on here every day, chances are you'll miss out on something cool if you don't dig a little bit. To make your time here on WinCustomize easier, I've rounded up a handful of recent forum threads I think you should check out... O...
Object Desktop has a lot of applications and tools to sort through. One of the more obscure but popular ones is RightClick, a tool that lets you design your own right-click desktop menus. In addition to being able to add custom items, you can skin them as well to match whatever skin you like. Here are a few great RightClick skins you may want to check out... ...
When it comes to customizable toys for kids, there really aren't that many options. Most toys are specialty items with a single purpose in mind (think action figures, toy cars etc.) and don't really push the imagination or creativity of a child. In the list of toys that focus on imagination, creativity and most importantly all without any reference to violence is short: Erector Sets, K'nex, LEGO. This month marks the 50th Anniversary of the LEGO brick. Originally in 1958, t...
For this week's poll, I'm looking to see what the most popular graphics tool is amongst the skinning community. Does Photoshop beat out Corel? Do we have some lingering Fireworks users out there in the wings? Are there any crazy MS Paint users clinging to the 16bit glory days? Let us know in the poll, and if I missed any obvious choices, toss them out in the comments below! Results will be posted next Monday.
